The classic 1987 Capcom arcade masterpiece Black Tiger is finally making its way to the Sega Mega Drive, thanks to an ambitious new homebrew development project powered by Earok’s Scorpion Engine and developed by Monster Bath Games Inc. The upcoming 16-bit port aims to give the legendary dark-fantasy platformer the definitive home console release it never received during the retro era. This game did receive home versions however, for the Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, and MSX, it was never officially ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Super Nintendo, or PC Engine.
Capcom's action-adventure gained a massive following for its sprawling, multi-directional scrolling levels, punishing difficulty, and the introduction of "Zenny" currency. Despite its success, the game was never officially ported to major 16-bit consoles like the Sega Mega Drive or Super Nintendo during its heyday. While computer versions landed on the Amiga and Atari ST via U.S. Gold in 1989, they were widely criticized for choppy frame rates, sluggish pacing, and a lack of in-game music. A heavily altered adaptation titled SonSon II made it to the PC Engine, but a true-to-the-arcade console port remained an unfulfilled dream for retro enthusiasts.
The team behind this port(?) are utilizing the arcade source material to deliver an authentic presentation. Players can look forward to controlling the barbarian hero through vertical and horizontal labyrinths, shattering walls for hidden treasures, upgrading armor, and battling the game's notorious dragon bosses. By utilising the Scorpion Engine's optimized tile-mapping and parallax scrolling capabilities, this homebrew release promises to deliver a fluid, high-frame-rate experience that vastly outperforms the compromised microcomputer releases of the late '80s.
A release date for the game has yet to be announced. However, retro gaming communities can follow active updates via the Scorpion Engine Facebook Page.
