ZX Spectrum owners if you feel a little left out worry not, as I've just found out through Saberman that Activision's 1980's River Raid, which was one of the most legendary scrolling shooters for the ZX Spectrum 48K, has been unofficially re-released as a teased River Raid+. An upcoming, enhanced remake of the classic retro shooter for the ZX Spectrum. While the engine sound is ear bleedingly terrible and can be disabled with POKE 52160,0, it does however feature a significant performance boost (~70% faster) with fixed and cleaned-up sprites.
The original game was designed by industry pioneer Carol Shaw—widely recognized as one of the world's first female video game developers—the game was converted for the Spectrum by Software Conversions Ltd. It quickly became a fan favorite for its simple, highly addictive mechanics. In River Raid, players pilot a fighter jet over the treacherous "River of No Return". The core objective is to advance behind enemy lines by destroying strategic bridges that mark the completion of each vertical scrolling level. Just make sure to pick up and not destroy fuel depots to refuel, and to shoot or dodge ships, helicopters, oncoming jets, land tanks, and observation balloons!
