Electric Dreams who has released a number of games such as TAZ and SPACE ZOT is working on bringing over the classic dungeon crawler Wizardry to the 16-bit Atari ST. Originally conceived as an 8-bit project, the developer pivoted to coding a simultaneous 16-bit version to maximize the efficiency of the game's existing data structures. Built using GFA BASIC, the game is already looking promising in its work-in-progress state, with successful hardware testing carried out on an Atari MEGA STE 4.
Shifting focus to the Atari ST has proved to be a smart engineering move according to the creator, significantly smoothing out the development process. Electric Dreams noted that working with a 16-bit architecture provided a massive relief compared to the tight constraints of 8-bit Atari. Thanks to the expanded RAM capacity and the superior graphical flexibility of the Atari ST line, translating the complex grid-based world of Wizardry has become a much simpler, more creative endeavour.
First version now available.
- It includes a whole host of castle features to manage your characters, equip them and even level them up.
- A few spells are available, including healing spells!
- And access to the dungeon to explore, fight and collect treasure. Level 1 is pretty polished but not quite perfect yet (Murphy’s ghost is missing).
