Jaleco’s 1985 arcade classic, City Connection, looks to be coming to the Amiga as a native conversion for the Amiga AGA. This latest port was born out of a fascinating, 15-hour collaboration between a human play-tester and the ChatGPT-6 / Astra AI model. Tasked with selecting and adapting a worthy mid-80s gem, the AI chose the vibrant, car-hopping platformer from the 1980's and built the conversion from the ground up. The developer ruliovega guided the project by supplying the original ROMs and providing vital, hands-on feedback, turning a broad conceptual question into a fully functional reality.
Far from being a simple automated generation, the conversion required an exhaustive, 18-stage iterative development process. The AI systematically handled everything from the initial proof of concept to full disassembly, writing native code, creating custom conversion tools, and preparing the final game launcher. Surprisingly, coding and disassembling proved to be the quickest parts of the job. The vast majority of the timeline was spent on rigorous quality control, with the AI comparing millions of pixels between the original arcade hardware and the Amiga version to eliminate bugs and hopefully deliver an authentic, pixel-perfect arcade experience.
- It is a native Amiga executable, not MAME running on an Amiga, and not a runtime 6809 interpreter.
- The renderer is native AGA: planar graphics, hardware scrolling, Copper palette updates, Blitter operations and double-buffered background restoration. Backgrounds, roads and HUD elements have their own handling.
- The music is not a MOD conversion, and the Amiga is not emulating the original sound CPU/chips in real time.
- This is an AGA conversion. The baseline target is a stock A1200: PAL AGA, 68020 and 2 MB Chip RAM
