Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge & Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - Classic Adventure games by LucasArts gets an AI PC-Amiga AGA port

Classic LucasArts adventures Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis have received lovely new 256-colour AGA enhancements for the Amiga 1200 by dlfrsilver. Developed by a passionate adventure fan utilizing AI assistance to accelerate development from the PC, these updated enhancements elevate the original Amiga OCS versions into an 8-bitplane display with pristine 256-colour visual integration. This is done according to dlfrsilver, by re-engineering the game engines to support these changes.

Beyond the 256 colour visuals, the enhancements completely rebuild the audio by replacing the original Amiga version's missing tracks with full PC SoundBlaster iMUSE music and sound effects. To capture the complex PC orchestrations without clipping notes, the developer implemented a custom six-voice audio system optimized for standard Amiga hardware. Despite this development process—which included spending two full days condensing a complex nine-voice Iceland track into the new system—the final builds run beautifully on a 14MHz 68020 processor and perform even better on a 68030 accelerator.

  • 68020 minimum + 8mb fast (can work with maybe less)
  • 68060 recommended
  • HDD (mandatory!)
  • The games uses 6 voices : 2 hardware + 4 in software.

    1. Hopefully we get some comparison videos soon :)

    2. Much faster than the Scummvm AGA versions.

  2. Unfortunately its incredibly slow on a 68020, and even 68030 seems too laggy. But maybe performance is better than running pc versions in scummvm ? Either way its a massive achievement, very well done.

    1. That's the problem with these AI developments, they really need to work on performance before release :(

    2. it's okay on 060. Not fast but playable.

    3. Same with Fliegeralarm Games release's , need a faster cpu just to be some form of playable :/

    4. Hello Haakan, i have tested the game on 68020 and 68030, the game runs at good speed on each of them. You need 8mb of fast and a 68020 14mhz. Even at this speed it works fine, otherwise i would then had specified 68030 directly. The game uses the original Amiga Scumm engine modified to use 256 colors 8bpl screens. You need PFS3 (very fast filesystem).

    5. @dlfrsilver, i tested MI2 in winuae. 020 14MHz, cycle exact set (full + dma). Also PFS3 and 16MB fast. Im used to test games with this config, and know it performs more or less like real hardware. That said, i think you have done a great job. Its nice to see AGA versions of these games. Hope theý will get optimized further.

  3. Lovely graphics. I loved the LucasArts games back in the day. On another note - any sign of a video of the new build of Amiga Rastan that dropped a couple of days ago?

    1. I didn't even know there was a new version, was pretty quiet on the EAB site. Thanks for the heads up!! I'll tag Saberman right away. Again cheers!

  4. I thought nice, until I saw the 060 recommendation. Garbage. It was only really the graphics needing updating and you should be able to do that and run on base spec A1200

    1. Bit harsh, it's only a recommendation based on other peoples experiences. But it might work fine for you below that :) Atleast it's not a pistorm recommended game :p

    2. Oh lord yes! I don't mind a pi storm requirement or any really if it feels sensible for how demanding the game is.

I am confused though, about the disparity between claiming an 020 is okay and recommending an 060. I expect a much smaller gap between the two

  6. The original version of Indiana Jones 4 in 11 disks for the A500 is perfect. This version here is pointless!

    1. Indiana Jones 4 in glorious AGA colours is pointless? I beg to disagree.

    2. I agree, the origial version is good as it is on the Amiga.
Get the pc/fm-towns talkie version and play it in scummvm if you want more.
It has better sounds too than this thing.

  7. In my opinion, this is a nice example of an AI put to a good use. The graphics is original, by the original authors. The script remains intact. As for coding - if Lucas Arts didn't have the time nor inclination to make it work on AGA machines, why not use AI? My only hope is that, in future, AI will become more efficient so these conversions would become more OPTIMIZED. Subjectively, these sorts of titles should work beautifully on an Amiga1200 with some fast ram.

  8. Tested indy4 in in winuae. Same issue as with MI2, and soon after the game starts, the display goes completely black and nothing works except the music. Anyone else having these problems on 68020, real hardware or cycle exact emulation?

  9. The graphics are now perfect, but I disagree that the new music system is an improvement. Monkey Island 2 now sounds like all the instruments are each playing to the beat of their own drum, all slightly out of time from each other. It’s maddening to listen to for more than a minute or two. I have a PiStorm, so it’s not a case of my Amiga underperforming either. Just add an option (a tooltype?) to restore the original music if desired. I also kinda wish the developer had done the talkie versions. The higher specced Amigas are capable of this, especially with AHI support. But I guess you can’t have everything!

  10. I have the same problem with the music, it just doesnt sound right. Also, its a pity it doesnt run well on a stock A1200. With some more care and optimization, this have the potential to be the aga versions we always wanted back in the 90s.

  11. Very nice. Thank you for that!

  12. Using AI does not mean it has to be slow: depends on what you ask to the agent, what are you're goals, etc.. if you ask the agent to match the speed of MI2 of a 286/16Mhz or 386/25Mhz on a stock A1200, the agent will do it (or at least try to do it). If it's not fast enough you can ask the agent to take advantage of the Amiga's hardware. Use the blitter, and so on. Simply ask the agent to reverse engineer/port a game won't likely give good results though.
