Grind - A first person shooter for Amiga 500, made with the amazing Dread-Engine! [New Update]

If you're looking for more gaming news on this upcoming first person shooter of 'Dread' for the Commodore Amiga 500 and above. Then we have just been informed through the EAB forums by Tsak. That not only does this work in progress game have 2 brand new tracks (Menus and in-game), but there's been several exciting milestones completed through development, and new screenshots and animated gifs that have been shown for this Doom-like experience!

And here's the latest from Tsak with inclusive links below.

1) The engine now FULLY SUPPORTS AMIGA MUSIC!!!

We have added 2 brand new tracks (Menus and in-game) and -as expected- the game has received a massive boost in presentation, mood & atmosphere! The two new tracks were made by me and Christoffer Magdalus, who recently joined us to help with the game's OST. On the technical side it is worth noting that Remz managed to make the complete system to run as efficiently as possible, meaning the player poses no extra burden to performance, plus the tracks are far less costly than a typical mod (reaching p61 levels)!

2) The game now features a more elaborate and expanded particle effects system (with options to increase the amount of particles on beefier setups)!

Blood now properly (and plentifully) spills from enemies and barrels produce fiery debris when exploding! Overall, these additions have made shooting targets a lot more satisfying! The system currently applies only to hitscan attacks (and has some limitations) but we plan to expand and polish it further later on.

3) And last (but not least), we finally also have the COMPLETE weapons roster (including secondary weapon attacks via RMB) FULLY IMPLEMENTED!

Lets break this down a bit:

- The pistol now has 2 modes (you can switch between them by pressing 1): the default is the 'unlimited' mode which has infinite ammo but is slower and does low damage. And the 'loaded' mode which uses a new ammo type and has much more firepower and better speed (essentially being almost as lethal and effective now as the other weapons).

- All 4 weapons have received secondary attacks which can be triggered via RMB! These secondary attacks use the same ammo type per weapon and pack more firepower (or other strategic benefits) in exchange for faster ammo consumption. With this addition we have (in essence) doubled the options for the player, adding to the weapons roster a hand cannon, a super shotgun, a grenade launcher and a BFG!

The gif above showcases the following:

  • - Pistol unlimited
  • - Pistol, LMB shot
  • - Pistol, RMB shot (explosive round)
  • - Shotgun, LMB shot
  • - Shotgun, RMB shot (double rapid fire)
  • - Chaingun, LMB shot
  • - Chaingun, RMB shot (explosive grenade)
  • - Rocket Launcher, LMB shot
  • - Rocket Launcher, RMB shot (supercharged explosive cluster)

    4. I'm assuming the background isn't parallax? So they're probably working with the limitations they have.

    7. Because there on a planet that has a moon that rotates every 20 minutes

    8. Oh, you thought this is happening on Earth, did you? This is so called ”Lunar winds” - a well known optical illusion on this planet, where the speed of the clouds seem to much that of one of the moons… ;)

    9. Neither of them are moving. The complex he is assaulting is mounted on a giant turntable.

  3. Awesome. Imagine this came out in 1993. or was the pack-in game for the CD32. Might have saved the Amiga from Commodores string of mistakes.

  4. "Doom-like experience!" It is only Doom like when your game has multiple floor (sector heights) This Grind currently doesn't have that so it is actually a Wolfenstein 3D like experience. The game is only one height.

    1. It's way more than Wolfenstein, but not quite Doom.

  6. You have to pay 12 Euro to actually check the demo?
    Crazy

    1. Be careful saying it is a demo, I had this argument with the developer on my YT channel because I said "demo" - it is not even that. It is a "specific slice" of the game (which I could have sworn was a demo).

Site owner, I am not sure how I can log in with my Google Account (it is greyed out, not allowing me to select it). I don't want to mention my YT channel here out of consideration that would be considered advertising. I understand if this comment is not allowed through, just wanted to bring up the registration problem.

    2. Completely agree. I ignore projects that charge/paywall demos. Hard pass.

    4. It's a rural tradition for them. They would ask for corn, but you can't pay with that online. That way they buy corn from the money.

  7. Time files that fast, that moon's movement got visible ;-) But seriously, the background should only move with rotation, I think, there's no need for that speedy movement of clouds, too.

    1. ...and it also moves with rotation. Not so long ago, we would even have been happy if such a game exists only with walls, and now that we have one and even the sky moves. I take this as a demonstration... that the engine is capable of this.

    2. Yes, no need for that. It could save processor time. Clouds and a moon bouncing across the sky aren't very attractive anyway. It seems like the game is slow.

  8. Grenades bounce? It can be a good improvement if you launch them and they bounce 1 or 2 times before exploding, so if you throw them into a wall will bounce and explode out of the corner to damage incoming enemies.

  9. This looks great, however I do hope that it doesn't spend too much longer in the tweaking phase and the levels get completed.

    1. Yeah, I'm getting impatient to see it released too. I think John Tsakiris said it'd be about 16 levels long.

  10. I ditched my Amiga CD32 as I just wanted to play Doom and the first Playstation came out. The only FPS game that could find on the CD32 was called Gloom (it was pants)

    1. Gloom was actually very good on the Amiga. The CD32 version was not overly fast/smooth, but it was a 14mhz 020 with no fast RAM. Just adding some fast RAM makes it run much better. Oh, and there were several first person shooters on the CD32 (Alien Breed 3D etc), not just Gloom.

  11. The floating moon does look a bit jarring, but I'm sure that can be worked out by the devs at some point. The main thing I'd like to know if when are they going to release a public demo (not a paid patreon demo) and have they worked out verticals in the levels yet? steps, small rises, that sort of thing, which was all handled ok by the original Doom. Looks pretty sweet otherwise. Will buy this one when it comes out providing it's not stupidly expensive.

  13. Bouncing grenades are good :) ...and what about a melee knife that can be thrown with the right button?

  14. Looking mighty fine and tasy🤘🏻

  15. I will buy this game.

    1. I will not buy it because we are poor here in Kazakhstan. I will watch a playthrough on Youtube and meanwhile I pretend if I was play it. ;)
