Although I'm personally not a fan of Star Wars (I blame my Ex :p). I've just found out through Earok however, that not only did the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis get a new homebrew release called 'Super Star Wars Holiday Special'. Which is an unofficial game from the cult-classic SNES Super Star Wars series, and loosely based on the outrageous The Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978. But as of today you can download the Commodore Amiga version, that's been ported over as the first public beta by Earok.
Sega Mega Drive version by Master Linkuei
Amiga Version by Earok
Here's the latest from Earok. "I'm very pleased to post a port of Master Linkuei's recent Mega Drive game to the Amiga. This is the first public beta, while it is complete it hasn't been broadly tested. Please let me know if you find any bugs or have other suggestions for improvements. Except for one or two short tracks, music is currently CD only. I'm very proud to get this one out the door - this is the first time a Mega-Drive-First Scorpion game has received an Amiga port. Hopefully there'll be a tonne more in future".
Requirements:
AGA, CD32 Pad. Music is CD32 only. 020/2MB chip minimum. 030 or Fast RAM recommended but not required.

Hello Earok, why the lower screen in the amiga version and the need for fast ram? Please elaborate its quite interesting to know the reasons.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteFast RAM is not needed but is recommended. I've been testing on my stock CD32 and found that it was playable but had slowdowns when there was a lot of action on screen. With six bitplane mode and potentially a lot of large sprites at once it pushes things quite hard.
The screen is narrower, 288 wide rather than 320 in the original. I wanted to have all eight sprites usable in order to fully port all of the parallax from the original game, but also I found at 320 wide there were glitches from there not being enough copper time to wrap all six bitplanes at the bottom of the draw buffer.
Hello Earok, many thanks for the response. So cd 32 is not as power as a sega genesys ? i am asking because for example in A500 shadow of the beast has much better graphics with more complex results. It very interesting to have a response from you.
DeleteSo is aga not a good as sega genesys chipset?
Many thanks!
For the parallax could you use dual playfield and for more colors additional halfbright in the same mode ot it is something that it is not supported in the engine?
Deletecould not create this on ECS ? it does not seems that hard.
DeleteHello Earok, any response to the above questions ?
DeleteIn terms of purely moving objects on screen while keeping performance to 50/60 fps the Mega Drive is better than AGA, yes. A1200 and CD32 still share the same Blitter chip as the a500. But other than that the answer is much, much more complicated. F.e. AGA and A1200 has infinitely better palette than Mega Drive, can display more colors on screen, it is more powerful with 3D stuff, it supports more and better resolutions etc.
DeleteAs for the other questions:
- Dual Playfield is not yet supported by Scorpion, perhaps in the future.
- EHB is not compatible with Dual Playfield. It is either one or the other. Also with AGA, EHB is pointless as AGA already can do better. Probably you mean using the copper to get more colors but this has severe restrictions and is not always usable to compensate for the color loss that comes with Dual Playfield.
- OCS/ESC would have a really hard time reproducing the above game. Perhaps only with very clever ASM coding and additional restrictions like loss of parallax, smaller sprites/blitter objects, less colors etc.
Go check earok’s patreon where these things are answered in a dev log. No, it couldn’t easily work on ECS. That Luke BOB gets huge, and it’s running at 50fps. There has to be some compromises to port to the Amiga, and these are the ones he chose.
DeleteMany thanks for the response. Could it be replicated on ECS if more ram was used ?
DeleteOCS/ESC would have a really hard time reproducing the above game. Perhaps only with very clever ASM coding and additional restrictions like loss of parallax, smaller sprites/blitter objects, less colors etc. - Have you seen kid chaos A500 ? This here is a joke in front of this, lets just say that amiga Needs ASM and very good coders and i am not saying that genesis is more advanced in some areas. Read also what the coder of Reshoot iii is saying about the amiga blitter , we have forgotten how strong ECS is in some areas.
DeleteMany thanks for your technical explanations, can you please explain how Mega Typhoon was possible on A500 , from the all the 16 bit shoot em ups in any systems , apart from the resolution its seems to be a very "heavy" game -

If it is so hard for ECS then how was Leander created ? Genesis has some advantages of course since it is a later hardware but again seen Leander this is not something special or better z I am just wondering..
DeleteWell done! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is very nice. Thanks a lot. Playing on my A4000/030
ReplyDeleteWhy do you refuse to release it on Aminet?
ReplyDeleteThanks for that game ! It's great to have more and more Star Wars games on Amiga. With the CD-32 gamepad, is it possible to throw the light saber on enemies or to block their laser guns shots ? I couldn't do it with my 2 buttons gamepad. Why is it so hard to climb trees ?
ReplyDeleteThe infamous Holiday Special is beyond terrible and hilarious at the same time. But it’s still better than anything after Return of the Jedi. Hopefully the game is decent. I will try it out!
ReplyDeleteGreat unofficial platform !! Good gameplay, nice fx, very like !
ReplyDeleteLooks great but really need to fix all the spelling mistakes or typos in the text. I understand English is probably not first language but never good to be riddled with mistakes. Thinks of C64 Shadow of the Beast with Psygnosis name spelt wrong!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! :) I am totally impressed. Thank you :)
