A "modernized" Speedball by Rebellion hits Steam

Lets go back to the 90's, a time of violent handball and ice hockey action, in which violence meets goal scoring antics that appeared in our homes on the Acorn Archimedes, Atari ST, Amiga, Amiga CD32, PC, Commodore 64, Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Game Boy and even the Game Boy Advance. Yes it is none other than Speedball 2, a 1990 game developed by Bitmap Brothers as the sequel to the 1988 game Speedball. So why am I mentioning this game you might ask? Well as of just recently a modernized version of this classic can be played through Steam.

Thanks Torque_live for the heads up

Here's the latest "Speedball is a no-holds-barred arena sport pitting two teams head-to-head in a pulse-racing match-up requiring speed, agility and aggression. Seamless top-down arena gameplay meets classic sports strategy – with added violence! A new entry into the iconic Bitmap Brothers’ original series: venture into the grim future of 2138 where mega-corporations use Speedball to distract the downtrodden masses from their miserable lives. Once an underground sport reviled for its brutality, Speedball has risen to unprecedented heights of popularity and profitability. Do you have what it takes to dominate the arena and take your team to the top?"

    1. Just from looking at the new version (I haven't played it myself), I would say that the original (which I played recently) was faster, yes. But it's also a different perspective, so maybe that's why I have that impression.

  3. Yeah, I got the same impression: "a bit slow" but I've seen some videos and it's ok in the end due to the new mechanics and hybrid view (and yes, there's a Turbo boost bonus in the game)....
So all in all it finally seems a decent remake to me...

  4. I would have preferred a polished new version with original camera placement above. Good effort though.

  5. I played the original with my best school friend on his Amiga 600 for hours and hours! Yeah it was faster than this, but to be honest it was a bit too fast for its own good. This seems to allow for a bit more tactical decisions.

    Interesting.

  6. nice to see multiple teams to choose and some new mechanics like the wall ride...but. this game doesn't capture the bitmap brothers timeless classics 'SpeedBall' and 'SpeedBall 2 Brutal Deluxe' look or feel. camera is wrong, its too slow, it doesn't look like the dystopian world that SpeedBall is set in and the modern way the characters behave just makes it even less like its set in the world of speedball. I hope with a lot of modding that this game will get close to a real speedball
