First Person Dungeon Crawlers have a huge fan base on Indie Retro News, so many of us love games such as Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder and my personal favorite Ishar. Well here we are with another special announcement especially if you love dungeon crawlers, as Rake in Grass has not only shown off some new footage for the work in progress PC game of Underkeep, but there's also a new demo that can be downloaded right now through Steam.
Here's the latest " Underkeep brings back the spirit of classic dungeon crawlers: grid movement, slow tension and tactical combat. At the same time it plays clean and responsive thanks to modern controls, clear visuals and thoughtful conveniences that remove the old frustrations without losing the heart. Gather your party, venture into hand-built dungeons, speak with peculiar locals, discover hidden passages, solve ancient puzzles and face encounters where planning matters as much as courage."
They go on to say that the game not only features multiple adventurers whose strengths and flaws define how you survive, but there's handmade corridors and rooms filled with lingering spirits, abandoned camps, cryptic symbols and choices that echo deeper than you expect. As well as tactical combat, hidden secrets, an automap, a well designed UI, NPC's to talk to, and so much more. Seriously if you love Dungeon Crawlers make sure to keep an eye out for Underkeep throughout 2026!
UPDATE : A demo of Underkeep is now available and can be downloaded through Steam.

I like the Giant monster! I liked it when i first saw it in Black Dawn:Hellbound as well!
ReplyDeleteEOBII had giants first...
Deletethe old man with the scroll smells like ai generated :(
ReplyDelete100% agree, the art style is all over the place.
DeleteAgree, the out of context wheel of cheese on the table looks extremely fishy.
DeleteHi! This is a producer of the game ;) It is hand-drawn, speed-painting. If you email us, I'll send you sketches. The artists has been working with us for two decades. Check his art (all large images, intro and characters) in Northmark: Hour of the Wolf, released long before AI.
DeleteWhen it comes to games I don't care about AI either way as long as the game is good.. But thank you anon for giving us the update! Having them hand-drawn and speed-painting is extra special. Nice work :) Excited for the demo
DeleteSurely, AI can be ok if used the right way, especially if doesn't scream AI. But I must admit I appreciate it so much more when things done the old-fashioned way. This artist clearly have great skills. Respect!
DeleteWhat platforms are this for?
ReplyDeleteWindows. Later it should be ported to Nintendo Switch.
DeleteThat looks so cool haha
ReplyDeleteWhere can I submit new crawlers?
ReplyDeleteHere is another retro crawler (a sequel in 3D is WIP):

Hey thanks for the link, looks good!
DeleteLooks amazing but will probably appeal to retrogamers mostly... I do hope its not priced at silly levels... this could get cult status if it is priced competitively.
ReplyDeleteNice, wishlisted on Steam. Hopefully it will come to GOG too.
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteWeird I will swear I saw this title in 2015 or so on some mobile phone / notepad... Only in my memories it has much better and colorfull graphic...
ReplyDeleteHi there :) This message is for the gamedevs :) First of all I love what I saw from the game : grats. However I have a bug launching it on my config. Please understand that I'm quite expert in IT problems, the behavior seems related to something managed by your game specifically, as I witness this on no other app so far. - So when I launch this game I simply get a black screen, but can hear the sound. Sometimes the game screen appears briefly, but dissapears again to black. I somehow managed to change the options, through hard tries, and could make it run in wondowed mode - then the game is playable, on a small window, but goes back to black screen as soon as I choose fullscreen mode. My rig is a Ryzen 5 5600x + RX 7900XT, in 1440p using HDMI on a 120Hz screen (this precision because the behavior made me think about a refresh rate problem at first). However after several setup changes, updates, tries, reinstalls, your game still shows a black screen. So I write all this because this informations is probably important for you :)
ReplyDeleteCan I just say this is bloody good! Played the demo from start to finish and was hooked! The only down side is the camera shake effects and the massive black bars either side of my game screen on ultra wide. It's trying to fit the constraints of classic crawlers I guess :p But could do with a bit more filling out. Still awesome!
ReplyDeleteRake In Grass previously produced Undercroft on iOS, a very similar dungeon crawler and, for my money, the best that was every available on that platform (I thought it was more engaging than The Quest). Undercroft was a massive game and I played it from beginning to end, enjoying every moment. This captures the spirit of that old game and I hope it can live up to it. Undercroft has not been available for years as it was, I guess, a 32-bit game. Updating it for modern iOS, if they find the time, would be nice!
