COCYTUS RUINS: PH'NGLUI MGLW'NAFH - A Lovecraftian roguelike for the Commodore 64 by cristiancubillos

There's been a new itch io game added with the release of Cocytus Ruins: Ph'nglui Mglw'nafh by , an ambitious dungeon crawler that brings Lovecraftian dread to the C64. Developed natively for the classic computer, this tactical role-playing game challenges players to survive shifting, cyclopean corridors teeming with crazed cultists and ancient, unspeakable abominations. The game relies heavily on psychological tension. Players must balance tactical survival against a crumbling sanity meter, underscored by atmospheric narrative text that shifts as the abyss takes its toll on the protagonist's mind.

Built entirely within the strict architectural boundaries of the original Commodore 64 hardware, the developers utilized modern, advanced cross-compilation techniques to maximize the system's capabilities. The result is a highly optimized engine that delivers sophisticated procedural generation and complex inventory systems rarely seen on 1980s hardware components.

Gameplay Features

Procedural Dungeon Generation:

  • Every descent into the Cyclopean Ruins is completely unique. The procedural algorithm randomly generates walls, corridors, enemies, and immersive narrative text on every floor.

"Corpse Run" Mechanic (Body Recovery)

  • Death is not the ultimate end, but it comes with a price. Upon dying, you wake up at the starting point of the map, but your items and collected gold remain sealed in a corpse at the exact location of your demise. You must venture back down and reclaim your belongings before it is too late!

Three Playable Archetypal Classes: Choose your destiny before descending into the abyss:

  • Investigator: High physical endurance, great brute strength, and resistance to madness.
  • Occultist: Fragile, but with a sanity/mana pool ideal for channeling arcane horrors to your advantage.
  • Priest: The perfect balance with access to constant healing based on their deity.

The Defector Cultist (Merchant): Between floors, you can spend your accumulated gold to buy forbidden potions or permanently upgrade your combat stats.
