The Commodore Amiga scene has a rather unique addition with the release of Out.Rex, a charming homebrew title developed by Fourseasons. Built using the classic AMOS BASIC programming language, this fresh game delivers a heavy dose of 16-bit nostalgia by merging two wildly different eras of gaming history. Out.Rex reimagines Google’s iconic, built-in Chrome Dino game through the lens of SEGA's legendary 1986 arcade racer, OutRun.
Instead of stomping through a monochrome, barren desert on foot, the game’s prehistoric protagonist trades running for driving. Players control the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex as he cruises down a vibrant, seaside highway in a sleek convertible sports car. The pixelated landscape is packed with retro arcade aesthetics, featuring coastal views, swaying palm trees, and flying seagulls. The core gameplay remains wonderfully straightforward and addictive for some. As the T-Rex accelerates down the coast, players must time their jumps perfectly to leap over obstacles like low-lying palm trees and avoid those incoming seagulls.
- The project originally started back in 2022 on the Commodore VIC-20 as an entry for a competition, before evolving into several different versions over the years.
The package includes two different versions of the game:
- - an ASCII-style retro version
- - a colorful 16-bit bitmap version with MOD music
You can choose which version to launch from the Startup-Sequence or directly from the Amiga CLI prompt.
- The background MOD music is my personal reinterpretation of the original SEGA Outrun soundtrack. Some sound effects were inspired by the original arcade version and by Arcade Parodius. All credits belong to their respective authors.
