Zombi - A classic Ubisoft horror with Zombies is coming to the Atari Lynx! (DEMO)

The Atari Lynx has received a slice of retro horror with a new port of Zombi, Ubisoft’s very first action-adventure game from 1986. Originally inspired by George A. Romero's cult classic film Dawn of the Dead, the ground-breaking title has been remade as a demo for the Atari Lynx by developer kikems for the Silly Venture competition, just in time to celebrate the game's 40th anniversary. Recreating the detailed, color-rich world within the handheld's hardware was no small feat. While the system's Suzy chip and central processor handled the game's speed beautifully, the developer faced an immense hurdle fitting the massive graphics, a double-buffered display, and the core CC65 program into a tight 64KB RAM limit.

The technical breakthrough required overcoming a major misunderstanding about how the Lynx reads cartridges. Instead of allowing continuous ROM access as expected, the cartridge behaves more like an Apple II disk drive, meaning everything active must squeeze directly into the system's RAM. Because the cartridge read speeds were too slow to stream data in real time and suffered from a strict 256-entry limit, the project nearly stalled. Ultimately, the port was only made possible through vital community contributions, utilizing a specialized sprite packer to compress assets within the system's memory and an optimized compression routine to squeeze the data onto the cartridge itself.
