Fishing Derby - Amiga Edition - An enhanced AI remake of Activision's 1980 Atari 2600 classic

Another Amiga game to talk about and it's the latest release of Fishing Derby – Amiga Edition, a new title developed by AmigaLive. Written entirely in native 68000 assembly language with the help of AI, this project serves as an enhanced remake based on Activision's beloved 1980 Atari 2600 classic, specifically for the Commodore Amiga. The gameplay transports up to four players to opposite piers of a bustling lakeside competition, where the primary goal is to hook passing fish and reel them in rapidly. However, anglers must stay sharp; a hungry great white shark patrols the waters, ready to snap the catch right off the line if players aren't fast enough on the reel.

While the game faithfully preserves the mechanics of the original Atari release—challenging players or teams to be the first to reach a winning 99 pounds of fish, players must choose between quickly landing small, 2-pound sunfish near the surface or risking a long haul from the lake bed to secure a hefty 6-pound snapper. The updated visuals are rather nice, featuring a dithered gradient sky with drifting clouds, shimmering water ripples, and rising bubbles. The animations add a layer of polish too, showcasing fishermen physically cranking their reels and a shark that bites and chews its stolen meals before swimming off to terrorise the opposing pier.

  • Runs on any Amiga with a plain 68000 and 512K chip RAM, with frame time to spare even in 4-player mode. It returns to Workbench or the CLI cleanly when you quit.
