Turrican 2 as an MS-DOS to AMIGA AGA conversion gets a release! (HOT NEWS)

Another great retro gaming story for all of our readers , as we've recently found out through an itch io page update, that Muzza has finally released the eagerly awaited MS-DOS to Amiga conversion of the classic action shooter game Turrican II. The second game in the Turrican series, which was originally developed by Factor 5 in the 90's and released on the Amiga, C64, CDTV, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum, and later for DOS.

This is a new conversion of the MS-DOS release which was created as a project to learn ASM, and much of written in C at the end. While the core game is basically the same as the Amiga version we know and love still to this day, it now features improved controls for joypads, more worlds to play through, a choice of the updated PC sprite or the original from the Amiga, special builds for the A500 Mini*, TFMX music playback fixes for 68040/60, 50/60hz action, full use of AGA enhanced 24 bit / 256 colour modes, new graphics, all levels plus various things that were missing in the DOS version have been reinstated (missing parallax, animations, waterfall effects, etc.), and so much more!

Hardware requirements:

  • An AGA Amiga (A1200/A4000/CD32) or emulator.
  • 2MB of Fast RAM (floppy version)
  • 8MB of Fast RAM (recommended for WHDLoad version)
  • Or an A500 Mini

  1. Great conversion, deserves to be played on original AGA machines, not on crappy A500 mini with major Input lag because of poor FPGA emulation.

    1. A500 mini isn't FPGA, it's software emulation. Minimig is much better than an A500!

    2. What? FPGA emulation? The mini only had an ARM CPU and emulates Amiga in software, no FPGA involved.

    3. A500 mini is not even FPGA simulation, it's just a bog standard (possibly JIT?) emulator.

  2. Truly awesome! It's great to see more 256 color Amiga games, and even pushing the old AGA to its limit.

  3. A500 mini isn't even FPGA based but it's better than not playing it at all.

  4. Playing on A500 Mini with a Logitech Wireless Gamepad and having no input or output lag at all.

  5. this awesome release shows that, with good pogramming skills, it's possible to achieve 50fps and 256 colours action games on AGA+Fast Ram. And they always said AGA was too slow to do gaming with so many bitplanes...

    1. It is. This isn't 8 bitplanes, probably 6 (64 colors) at most and counting the copper rainbows as colors. Most ECS games were just 4 bitplanes (16 colors), spiced up with copper tricks.

    2. The programmer said used 7 then 8 bitplanes. Many coding details are explained in the (long but worth reading) thread: https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=106735&page=4

    3. I programmed this and I can confirm it uses 8 bitplanes everywhere except the spaceship levels which use 7.

    4. The Fast RAM helps a hell of a lot.

  6. Looking good. Shame about the extra memory for the adf version. Would have liked to have played this on my A1200.

  7. Play it perfect on the Vampire V4 Standalone.

  8. Beautiful, graphically very nice, let's hope in the playability ... maybe a boxed version on floppy or CD for the CD32 would come out :)

  9. What an excellent job! Thank you very much Alastair Murray! The game brought me a lot of joy during the passing Christmas holidays and the satisfaction that with good programming skills and proper use of AGA chipset, it's possible to port games from PC-DOS VGA without loss of quality and even with some extra graphic features. I think most 2D games from the VGA PC-DOS era could be ported this way, unfortunately the Amiga AGA lifespan was to short on the market and never got the developers attention it deserved. It would be also nice to release AGA version of Turrican 2 for Amiga CD32 with Chris Huelsbeck's music tracks on Audio CD format (from Turrican Soundtrack Anthology Vol.2) and maybe with some CDXL animated intro/outro drawn in manga style. Maybe someone from the community could do such animations?
