Toki C64 Remastered gets new footage and it looks AWESOME

Toki was an awesome arcade shooter platformer that was released way back in 1989 by a designer by the name of Akira Sakuma for many different systems such as the NES, Sega Mega Drive, Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Amiga and Commodore 64. In it you played as an enhanced Ape transformed from a Human that could shoot energy balls from his mouth defeating strange creatures and finally an evil Wizard. Well If you remember this truly great game, you'll be pleased to know that at some point in the near future, you'll be able to play a remastered version which is still in development for the C64!

While we have mentioned Toki Remastered before much to the delight of the C64 community, here's what the Facebook page says about the very latest video posted above. "This is a full playthrough (boss included!) of Stage 5 (Dark Jungle) of Toki C64 Remastered, featuring 100% redesigned enemies (and misc sprites, except Toki himself) converted directly from the Arcade to be as true as possible. Toki C64 Remastered is a fan-made total makeover of the original conversion of the arcade game Toki released by Ocean for Commodore 64 in 1991".

If everything works out as planned, Toki C64 Remastered will feature:

  • - All sprites redrawn from scratch
  • - Improved or completely redrawn backgrounds
  • - New music and SFX true to the arcade
  • - Improved controls
  • - Bug fixes
  • - All of this will be released on a brand new CRT file you'll be able to download for free.
So yes this is one game we will be watching throughout developments and hope for a non exclusive release at some point during 2024!

    1. Thank you! I did redesign Toki’s sprite already, it’s just not in the game yet. Look for it on our facebook page https://m.facebook.com/TokiC64Remastered

    2. yea, its good to adjust how remember things. I do only real c64's, even composite connection to crt shows very deep colors (old sony trinitron crt) and sharp pixels. FPGA commodores also shows visuals correctly like ultimate64, m1ster etc. where can compare. It's good to open up some discussion :) its the only way to fix things :D

  4. This will be the game of the year, and this with a normal C64 imagine with an REU how it will look.

  5. Looks and sounds great, but there should be hit indication for the enemies, you know, change their colour to indicate they've been hit. Other than that, a fantastic conversion.

  6. Shame that c64 vice emulator been broken for years and looks very washed out for colors. Real colors and working emulators for example Denise or hoxs64, just saying since game visuals has been made better, dont make that mistake to play it on vice then or represent it on broken emulator :)

    1. I actually like how my game footage looks, I set my Vice CRT emulation to look just like I remember my C64 games to appear on my monitor: colorful, a bit saturated and slightly blurred to soften harsh wide pixels edges

  7. You can increase the sharpness from the settings of Vice

  8. Sorry for moving off-topic a little: I use vice because of the pastel colour-palette. Actually I am using an older version because a newer one switched to more saturated colours, ugh. That's one of the biggest appeals of C64 gaming - the unique pastel colour-palette compared to all other 8-bit machines (and 16bit for that matter). But I guess books (or rather loooong websites and discussions) have been written about that subject.

  9. I used to play it on the Amiga, I loved it. It's an amazing game and I love the soundtrack too. It would be cool to play through on the C64. It looks fantastic! All the best guys!
