Stunt Car Racer running at a super smooth 60fps on the Amiga? [UPDATE]

In the late 80's, Geoff Crammond released the incredible game of ' Stunt Car Racer '. It involved you the player, racing around a 3D track in a first person view using a vehicle which had boost capabilities. It was also one of the greatest racing games ever released and what made it so great was the fact that all of the tracks were like rollercoasters, with such dangerous driving and incredible heights involved it would've killed anyone if it was real life. But this month as a bit of a shock, a coder by the name of Vesuri looks to be working on an Amiga version of Stunt Car Racer that's running at a smooth 60fps. Something Amiga owners have been wanting for a very long time.


Either its blind nostalgia or something else but I've never had a problem with the frame rate in the game, but even so back in 2016 there was a number of owners hoping for a smooth 50/60fps frame rate and offerings of £400. In fact according to one user, part of the reason he even bought a 68060 at the time was the hope that SCR would break the ~15fps frame rate it was fixed to. That hope didn't bear fruit at the time, but with this latest tease there's hope we may finally see a 60fps Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga...

UPDATE Checking my comments feed early this morning I was told by Vesuri, that not only is there a new video provided above, but we've finally got a long list of details about this super smooth Stunt Car Racer that is coming to Amiga at some point in the near future.

DETAILS:
  • Recorded from FS-UAE due to no proper way to record from actual hardware
  • It will not be possible to get the game running 60 FPS on a 7MHz 68000 Amiga 500
  • Exact Amiga specs required to get 60 FPS are not known yet but it is known to run 60 FPS on an Amiga 1200 with a 68040 at 40MHz and 20 FPS on an Amiga 600 with a 68020 at 18MHz so it's likely that for example an Amiga 1200 with a 68030 at 50MHz will surely do the trick
  • It does not require AGA
  • The physics still need some work

  1. But what spec is this Amiga. Is doesn't say which is highly suspicious. He doesn't mention it in the YT discription either.

    2. I can only guess, but I suspect an Apollo/Vampire, it’s a 68080 FPGA machine with Super AGA and Maggie 3D.

  7. The speed is way way off in the video. Increasing the framerate is fine, but the hard part here would be to keep the original gamespeed the same, regardless of cpu used. This project fails there alas.

    1. That's incorrect. The speed is the same as in the original version. That's the entire point of this version. It does not just increase the frame rate but retains the intended behavior.

    2. Speed Looks about right. Maybe a little fast in curves, but that may actually be what the Speed should have been in the First place. No way it's way way Off IMHO.

    3. The original is developed for pal, if you think the speed in the video is the correct one you have been playing the wrong version in the US all this time. The ntsc version is stunt track racer.

    4. The speed in that video looks a little fast. The original game was released for PAL machines, that speed looks like it is NTSC.

  8. Wrong platform to post this in, however, if you are a PC coder, please do whatever you can to implement multiplayer for the PC version. This is one of the best games ever and is beyond fun in multiplayer. Tried to get it (multiplayer) to work with WinUAE, but, I am not that skilled. Unless someone has the recipe on how to get WinUAE to work with two computers in network, then all is good. So, please, let's do this, implement network on the PC version. Also, mmm, while you are at could you please take a look at the graphics too, thanks.

  9. Incredible work! Definitely something I dreamed of running 30+ years ago on my A500+GVP A530. I know this gets religious for some but A500 owners who haven't yet upgraded their systems should really consider it, Amiga was never intended to remain one static specification and the experience is massively improved via upgrades.

    1. That is a good question, doesn't show from the video and I couldn't find a beta to download. There is a plea two comments above. Maybe someone will make a kickstarter or something and get this going for the PC. Who knows.

  12. Regarding multiplayer:
    For those of us who are running the original Stunt Car Racer in WinUAE, would a USB-to-RS232 adapter, then a real Amiga null-modem cable, and then another USB-to-RS232 adapter work for this purpose?

    Would love to play on two Windows machines.

    Anyone?

      Yes, you can use the USB-to-RS232 adapter with the FTDI chip and a DB9 with breakout terminal connectors for this and other games. Connect Pin 2 to 3, Pin 3 to 2, and Pin 5 to 5 on the other DB9. Select the correct COM port under WinUAE, check Direct and UAESerial.device, leave the rest blank, and off you go. Enjoy!
