Rex: Into the Shadow Realm - This upcoming Amiga sequel from HoysterGames looks rather special!

Well this is fantastic news and one I didn't expect to be writing today! Is the fact that Hoyster Games (Kevin Watson-Hoy & Matthew McGuire), has officially announced its third title, Rex: Into the Shadow Realm, a fast-paced vertical shooter coming to the classic Commodore Amiga later this year with a demo in June. Serving as a direct sequel to Rex and the Galactic Plague, this upcoming release marks the third expansion of the studio's expanding Osiris Universe, which also includes The Osiris Infection.

The story kicks off with a sudden, devastating offensive launched by a mysterious faction known as the Shadow Raiders, operating from their stronghold on the planet Oberon Reach. Players must redeploy the heroic Rex across a variety of hostile alien worlds to destroy dimensional portal generators. However, as the conflict unfolds, pilot intelligence suggests this inter-dimensional war is far more complex than a simple battle of good versus evil.

In an exciting twist for retro shoot-'em-ups, Into the Shadow Realm features two complete, distinct campaigns. Players can choose to defend the galaxy with the Space Corps or switch perspectives to fight alongside the Shadow Raiders. While the entire game spans nine distinct levels, a single playthrough consists of six stages, with unique encounters and environments dictated entirely by your faction alignment. Survival in the deep reaches of space requires careful financial management. By completing mission objectives, players earn credits to spend in an interactive, in-game shop. Upgrades include enhanced weapon systems, reinforced shields, extra lives, and vital continues. Players must balance immediate survival upgrades against long-term scoring strategies, as hoarding credits or investing heavily in firepower directly impacts the final score.

The project is spearheaded by Kevin Watson-Hoy, who handles game design, pixel graphics, and the overarching narrative. The game's original soundtrack is being composed by Matthew McGuire, though current internal builds utilize temporary public domain tracks. Alpha testing duties are being handled by a dedicated team consisting of Roar Tjørhom, Jake Watson-Hoy, and Harrison Watson-Hoy. Rex: Into the Shadow Realm is being developed using the versatile Scorpion Engine, the developer has tailor-made the game to run smoothly on classic hardware.
