Galaxian - A brilliant Arcade classic by Namco comes over to the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis

Namco’s 1979 arcade classic Galaxian expanded on the foundations of Space Invaders by introducing dive-bombing alien formations backed by fluid animations. This aggressive behavior introduced a risk-reward dynamic, as shooting these charging enemies mid-flight yields significantly higher scores. Now, Sega Mega Drive owners can experience this arcade classic at home, with a new port built on static translation by namalgo. Instead of rebuilding the software from scratch, this technique translates the original Z80 arcade logic to run natively on the console's MC68000 processor, ensuring the core gameplay remains entirely unaltered.

To preserve the authentic arcade feel, the developer imported the original graphical ROM assets directly, carefully cropping the display to fit standard television screens without compromising the gameplay mechanics. The audio hardware differences presented a unique hurdle, but the sound design has been meticulously replicated to mirror the arcade's distinct atmosphere. Players can also take advantage of a newly integrated auto-fire feature mapped conveniently to the B button. The game is fully compatible with Sega Genesis emulators like RetroArch and Mednafen, and has been verified to run flawlessly on MiSTer FPGA hardware.

An interesting fact, if you play Mortal Kombat 3 on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in two-player mode for 100 consecutive matches, the game will pause and load a playable, fully functional emulation clone of Galaxian!

  1. I played that "fully functional emulation clone" of Galaxian in MK3. It ain't emulation, and it sure ain't Galaxian. It's a cute addition but it feels really rudimentary, the kind of game you'd only play once.

  2. There's already a transcode of Galaxian for 68000 that runs on Amiga & NeoGeo. I hope the code was reused, because else it's really a waste of time (or waste of A.I.)

  3. The graphical rendering is excellent. The stars layers seem to be 1:1 vs the original, and the score on the side is a nice touch as I think that MegaDrive cannot display as much as the 288 pixels required vertically.
