Ranbler is a brand new release for the ZX Spectrum Next that pays homage to Konami’s classic 1981 arcade hit, Scramble. Built entirely from scratch, the game serves as the creator's very first full production using z80 asm language on the Next. According to zxspeccykid who released this great clone via itch io, he took on the self-challenge of mastering the Next's advanced hardware capabilities, learning how to manipulate Layer 2 graphics, sprite behaviors, and custom color palettes along the way. Deeply indebted to the homebrew community, the creator credits developer Kev Philips for the foundation of the project, as well as the numerous Next programmers who share their open-source material on platforms like GitHub to help others study and learn the craft.
The game delivers a pretty decent arcade experience spread across 13 continuous levels that seamlessly roll into one another with a steadily climbing difficulty curve. Players must navigate treacherous cavern terrains, bomb ground targets, and manage their resources just like in the original arcade masterpiece. Because this was a solo learning project coded straight into .asm, the creator acknowledges it might feel a little rough around the edges, but they have thoughtfully included a couple of built-in debugger cheat keys to help players along.
- The name 'RANBLER' is a mix of RANble to acknowledge the original PC and ZX Next version from 2021, as well as assemBLER.
