Enhanced framerate versions of Amiga games via AI and Vesuri

Vesuri with the help of AI is aiming to give many classic Amiga games a bit of a performance boost and some much needed bug fixes. For some time now, Amiga owners have faced a frustrating bottleneck: purchasing powerful hardware expansions—like the legendary Apollo 1240 accelerator card for the Amiga 1200—only to find that most classic games still struggled to run smoothly. Because early 90s software was rarely written for these faster, upgraded hardware setups, even the most expensive configurations left players disappointed. Drawing on extensive expertise from the Amiga demo scene, Vesuri recognized that the hardware was capable of far more, sparking a long-held ambition to patch these foundational software limitations to make the most out of powerful accelerators.

The breakthrough arrived after Vesuri successfully optimized the classic Stunt Car Racer to run at a blistering 50 frames per second. While that initial project required painstaking manual programming, recent technological leaps in artificial intelligence opened the door to a much faster, more scalable approach. By combining advanced AI tools with an intimate knowledge of the Amiga’s custom architecture, Vesuri is now actively releasing enhanced frame-rate versions of highly requested games on GitHub. These upgrades build directly upon existing WHDLoad infrastructure established by scene veterans like JOTD, Psygore, StingRay, and CFou!. To keep the installation process simple and avoid disrupting upstream maintainers, players can easily upgrade their experience by swapping out the original slave files, bringing enhanced performance updates to old classics. To see what's current being worked on with the latest video's it's worth visiting the website link all the way at the bottom.

Wing Commander Amiga Enhanced

  • Optional enhanced framerate with smoother flight, cameras and ship effects.
  • Consistent game speed on faster processors and smoother cinematic movement.
  • Retimed intro, room, briefing, launch, landing, death and funeral animations.
  • Improved projectile appearance and asteroid/mine hit detection.
  • Waypoint markers stay visible in front of nebulae in every English mode.
  • More responsive room controls with limited cursor speed.
  • Disk edition: faster arithmetic and collision checks in every mode, including the Amiga 500, without changing game behaviour.
  • Enhanced mode and caches enabled in newly installed icons; original modes remain available.
Their Finest Hour Enhanced
  • Enhanced framerate: faster, tear-free rendering and full ground detail on fast Amigas, with consistent game speed at different frame rates
  • Corrected controls, aiming, bullet hits, bombing, AI and gameplay timing with Enhanced framerate enabled
  • Adjustable mouse sensitivity: 1x, 2x (default), 4x or 8x
  • Improved flight recording and playback, with 128-second recordings
  • Fixed repeating explosion and splash sounds
  • Enhanced framerate is enabled in the supplied game icons (CUSTOM2=1). Uncheck it in the WHDLoad startup options to use the original game mode
  • New enhanced movie saves require Enhanced framerate in this slave; original movie files can still be loaded

Road Rash Enhanced
  • Enhanced framerate for smoother, vsynced play on Fast RAM Amigas, enabled in the installed icon (CUSTOM2=1)
  • consistent simulation speed on the accelerated path, with reduced visible steering lag and corrected opponent lane occupancy
  • fixed distant and mirror bike flicker and vertical jumps on hills
  • fixed joystick steering recentring and keyboard/CD32 pause handling
  • fixed a loading crash on uncached 68030 machines
  • blanked the border during play on ECS/AGA machines
  • updated installer; cancelling replacement preserves an existing installation
Red Baron Enhanced
  • CPU-specific rendering improvements and consistent game speed under one Enhanced framerate checkbox, enabled in the supplied icons.
  • ReadMe and installer adapted to the WHDLoad Install Template, retaining JOTD's three-disk layout, executable decompression and icon choices.
Test Drive Enhanced
  • Optional Enhanced framerate for smoother driving, scenery and traffic, with more consistent race timing and average-speed scoring.
  • Fixed sideways road and scenery jumps, including through bends.
  • Restored steering response through bends.
  • Fixed nearby vehicles disappearing before a collision.
  • Fixed the rev counter needle wrapping around when over-revving.
  • Fixed repeated drum hits in the opening music.
  • Improved compatibility with accelerated Amigas.
  • Updated installer and clearer setup instructions.
4D Sports Driving Enhanced
  • Fixed the flickering blue background in the DSI intro.
  • Faster rendering with a single "Enhanced framerate" option, enabled in the installed icon (CUSTOM2=1).
  • Correct game speed and race timing regardless of rendering speed.
  • Experimental A4000 simulation for smoother, more responsive driving on faster PAL Amigas, selected by default on 68040/68060 systems.
  • Automatic simulation defaults and saved simulation preferences.
  • Replay saving and playback for A4000 mode; original replays remain supported.
  • A4000 jumps are closer to A2500; older A4000 replays are incompatible.
And that's just a small list of games that is currently getting much needed performance improvements and or big fixes for the Amiga. But for further developments and downloadable files hit the link (HERE)
