The Curse of Sherwood - Sunteam remakes a classic Mastertronic title for the PC!

Sunteam is back with some 8-bit nostalgia with their latest PC remake, The Curse of Sherwood. This latest release modernises a classic budget arcade adventure originally crafted by Derek Brewster and published by Mastertronic back in 1987 for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Amstrad CPC. Heavily inspired by the iconic Spectrum edition, the game plunges players into an endangered Sherwood Forest, which has fallen under the tyrannical control of the sinister Cult of Sagalia. After Robin Hood and his Merry Men suffer a devastating defeat at the hands of the cult, a desperate Friar Tuck seeks the aid of the Bishop of Derby to perform a grand exorcism. However, the plan takes a dark turn when the Bishop is found dead, leaving behind a bloody parchment inscribed with a cryptic rhyme that holds the ultimate secret to destroying the cult once and for all.

Stepping into the sandals of Friar Tuck, players must navigate a treacherous, flick-screen world viewed from an elevated side angle to locate the artifacts necessary to complete the holy mission. Strategy is key, as Tuck's inventory is strictly limited to carrying just three items at a time, forcing players to think carefully about where and when to deploy their findings across the dense forest layout. The woodland paths are teeming with hostile creatures that will fire projectiles at any opportunity, and a single touch from these enemies or their weapons will cost you one of your three precious lives. Fortunately, the holy man isn't entirely defenseless; you can retaliate by throwing swords and gradually upgrading your arsenal to more powerful weaponry as you explore deeper into this charmingly reimagined retro quest from Sunteam.

AI Assisted, Sounds

  • We sourced music from Pixabay but did not realise that the tune used AI until it was near release and by then it just fitted the game so well that we decided not to change it. In future we will be more vigilant and do our best to source only human made audio.
