Indiana Jones and the temple of doom - An AI fan-made PC point & click adventure in the classic SCUMM tradition

BBGames has released a new adventure game titled as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, an ai assisted, fan-made point-and-click adventure crafted entirely in the style of classic 90s SCUMM engines. This fan-made adaptation translates the entire film into a game, guiding players scene-by-scene from the neon lights of Shanghai all the way to the iconic, nail-biting rope bridge finish with entirely fresh dialogue. While you will spend the bulk of your adventure stepping into Indy's dusty boots, the perspective shifts at key moments to put you in control of Willie and Short Round. The gameplay itself according to the website strikes a balance between brain-teasing adventure mechanics—featuring deep inventory puzzles, clever dialogue choices, and a randomized catacomb door that changes with every new playthrough—and interactive set pieces like the frantic Shanghai car chase, a cargo plane dogfight, and the legendary runaway mine cart race.

The game further adapts the story from the movie, dropping you right into the chaos of 1935 Shanghai. A tense artifact trade at Club Obi Wan goes completely sideways, leaving Dr. Jones poisoned, a massive diamond rolling across the dance floor, and a desperate escape underway. Fast forward a few hours, and Indy, Willie, and Short Round find themselves falling from the Himalayan sky straight into rural India. There, they encounter a starving village whose sacred Sankara stone has been stolen and whose children have vanished into thin air. All clues point up toward the mountains to Pankot Palace, a mysterious fortress that has suddenly lit up after eighty years of darkness

  1. Amazing... the idea, sure, the idea of having an adventure game based on Temple of Doom. But have you actually tried it?
I have nothing but love for anyone working on amateur, indie, or free projects. They have my full sympathy and support, and I genuinely mean that — I do the same kind of thing myself. But for heaven’s sake… there has to be at least some minimum standard of quality. Give it a try. You only need to look at the very first scene, with character sprites that are horribly pixelated, facing random directions, walking over background objects, or shooting in completely random directions.
Calling it amateurish would be an understatement. I’ve played hundreds of indie adventures made with Adventure Game Studio, going back twenty years, and they were well made. This is a disaster. I sincerely hope this is some pre-pre-alpha of an unfinished tech demo rather than the finished product, because it’s... well, embarrassing.

  2. Ugh, I actually believed it for a second, but nope 🙁
It's a total letdown, it doesn't move the story forward at all, and it's a far cry from the fun of the real LucasArts games 🙁
The graphics might have been okay for the backgrounds, but the characters are way too stereotypical
    Indy doesn’t look like Indy...
Anyway, it’s a shame, a waste of time for a game that actually deserves to exist, given how cool the movie is ❤️
AI still doesn’t make for talent 😂
I’m praying we’re better than this, otherwise, I’ll just bury my head in the sand
