Aces of the Pacific - An MS-DOS combat flight sim by Dynamix gets a PC modernization

On this Remembrance Sunday, I thought it would be worth mentioning that the legendary MS-DOS combat flight simulator Aces of the Pacific, has un-officially received a modern PC port. Dubbed Aces of the Pacific: Enhanced, this project was developed by Kylofon through reverse-engineering with the help of AI. While completely revitalizing the classic with upgraded modern performance and improved visuals, the new native version faithfully preserves the magic of Dynamix’s original 1992 masterpiece. For many players, the classic title originally published by Sierra On-Line was the definitive World War II Pacific Theater flight simulator, even outclassing heavyweight contemporary rivals like 1942: Pacific Air War.

The modernized release allows a new generation of players to dive into the historic aerial conflicts of World War II. True to the original, players can pilot individual single missions or embark on extensive career modes, choosing to fly for the United States Navy, Marines, or Army Air Forces, or take to the skies for the Imperial Japanese Army or Navy. By bridging the gap between the nostalgia of the MS-DOS version and modern PC hardware, Kylofon's project honors the legacy of Dynamix—who famously followed up this landmark simulation with Aces Over Europe in 1993—giving aviation enthusiasts a seamless way to revisit one of the most influential flight games ever made.

Features

  • Smooth 3D view at your display's refresh rate.
  • High resolution (up to 2560 × 1600) with anti-aliasing; optional 16:9 widescreen.
  • Three times the view distance, the finest aircraft and ship models at every distance.
  • Distance haze, a smooth sky and a soft horizon.
  • Held direction keys combine (Left + Down pulls through a turn).
  • Separate flaps down and flaps up keys.

Requires the CD-ROM version 1.2 of Aces of the Pacific (it includes WWII: 1946). The floppy releases (1.0, 1.01, 1.2 / Patch B and the 1946 expansion disk) don't run: they are separate builds of the game. The launcher and the game say which version a folder holds. A copy is at the Internet Archive: download AcesotP.zip and use the files of its AcesotP\DYNAMIX\AOTP folder.
