Tony - This demo for the Commodore Amiga by Monochrome Productions looks super!

The Amiga news just doesn't stop! As after already featuring Forest of Illusion, Skinvaders (Prototype), Street Fighter and the eagerly awaited Rastan, we have recently been informed by Saberman, that a new Amiga demo has been teased called 'Tony' by Monochrome Productions! While we don't have any information about the games development just yet, all we can go on is this 2min video showing a glimpse of the demo by Pawel Tukatsch, Michal Brzeziki, Rafal Dudek and XLent,

While the details are very sparce about 'Tony' which is a tribute to Tony Halik. From what we can see via the teaser video provided by Rafal Dudek. Tony looks to feature not just monochrome graphics, but deadly enemies such as bats and snakes, charming animations, nasty spike traps, and a nod to classic monochrome platformers games many of us still love to this day. And that's all we have on this demo, but as ever as soon as we know more we will of cause let you know :)

    1. Well I love it, reminds me of the MAC which I used to have as a Kid... But then anything positive I say gets ignored by some developers :(

  4. I do like the monochrome. But if you have only one bitplane to deal with, why not use the freed-up resources to use a higher resolution?

    1. The game is mono, so it will be available on Atari XL, Commodore C64 and ZX Spectrum. It's a reference to comics from the 80s where there was no color.

    2. There was no color in the 80s ..... ok...

    3. That's great news! The looks awesome, I'd love to play it on the C64.

    4. Many indie comics were printed in black and white in the 80s. A rather famous one being the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Marvel and DC were colour, sure. But there was a big whole world of comics outside of the big two even then. :)

    5. If this ever gets released the uncensored reception will be a cold shower.

  6. I've often wondered why more Amiga games didn't choose the monochrome approach more often, for one it makes for a more unique look, and the most obvious advantage is performance. Think of how much more things can be implemented as a result of so few colours...

  7. It looks great, but the animation is pretty choppy and the jump could use some work. I hope those two things will be improved before release. I also wonder what language it is coded in? If the screens shown in the video are of the actual development, then it looks like it could be Blitz Basic 🤷‍♂️

  8. Seems like this should be on the Speccy, Mac or Gameboy - will give it a whirl if it's free, but not sure why the Amiga was the target platform?

    1. Only "constructive criticism allowed" but this game really leaves me without anything constructive to say other as I agree it might be ok as a Speccy or Gameboy game.

    2. Well games like this are made as tribute for 8-bit, to show off the programming skills by making the game as small as possible. There are plenty of games for PC that use 8-bit aesthetics, some of them are super minimalistic graphicaly. This is an idea to make something using limited disk space, color palette. That's why there are things like 'fantasy consoles and computers' which are virtual machines with limited capabillities and integrated programming/game making environment. Pico-8 is the best example.

  9. Why are the developers unwilling to disclose that this is a game “heavily inspired” 🤨 on Gordian Tomb? Would definitely give you more credibility in my book.

    1. I'll be honest, I've never seen a Gordian Tomb game. I played Montezuma's Revange when I was a kid.

  10. This visuals should've been the norm on PC with Hercules graphics card! I love it. Actually, this kind of graphics brings an idea of unifying game style across all popular platforms of the 80's. Such a retro delight, plus going into field of classic b/w comic books. Last but not the least - brings back the exciting idea of making decent game using classic tools like AMOS Basic, probably fast enough to achieve ZX Spectrum kind of arcade gameplay on Amiga. And no colors makes it easier for amateur designers to bring some neat drawings on their own.
