Undead - A Splatterhouse and Vigilante mix is coming to your C64 and PC!

I think that's enough Amiga news for this weekend, as turning to the C64 for our retro goodness, and I've found out that at some point in the near future, Brains Limited will be releasing their action slasher of 'Undead' for both the C64 and PC. A game that's described as a brutal and humorous 2D belt-scroller with hundreds of frames of hand-crafted animation. A game that's full of all the punching, kicking, throwing and decapitation you could want in 100x120px glory. To coincide with this news, provided below is footage from both the C64 and PC version.

C64

PC Version

And here's the full details from the Steam page. "Originally developed for Commodore 64 in 1990-1992, Undead has risen from the grave to haunt both Commodore 64 and PC with fully hand crafted-bitmap images(PC) and hundreds of frames of animation. Control Jon, a hyper-violent enhanced half-human-half cyborg in his mission to find the captive scientists from city that is infested with zombie outbreak as well as satanic cult bikers and demons from hell. Simultaneously developed for the two platforms, Undead boasts multiple attack moves, melee weapons, supercharged jatimatic and grab/throw/hurl system which enables you to do "zombie bowling" against stronger enemies".

  2. Is there a list of differences between the two versions of the game?

    1. From my understanding, the PC version was created with the exact limitations of the C64's hardware, as a way to prototype the game's engine and nail the gameplay with an easy-to-use platform like Unreal Engine, before getting stuck into the assembly code of the C64 version. This was right down to colour limitations and emulating how the sprite multiplexor would work. The sprites do some very interesting things like expanding on X and Y for single frames here and there to minimise sprite count in a way that's not so noticeable in gameplay, allowing for a large number of enemies on screen.
In short, I'd expect them to be almost identical, at least at first. Maybe they plan on adding some PC enhancements at some stage.

  5. Wow, this looks really cool, especially the animations. Is a 2-player-simultaneous function planned? That would be fantastic.

    1. Unfortunately not feasible. C64 has horizontal hard limit of 8 sprites. Player character takes 2 sprites and 1 extra sprite for weapons. So with two players, you would be able to only have 2 enemies on screen at the same time. On PC, it's possible, but the amount of work and balancing would feel little bit meaningless if it can't be realized on C64 version as well.

  6. Wow those animations looks great. And i love the style of the game. And of course the story behind it. I have a weak spot for making a "childhood" dream come true!
