AcidBottle, the prolific developer behind impressive Commodore Amiga ports like Breakthru and Wonder Boy, has officially announced their latest project: an ambitious conversion of Capcom’s 1985 arcade hit, Section Z. Described by the developer as a "prequel, of sorts" to the later Side Arms, the Amiga version of Section Z is being built using the versatile Scorpion Engine, which has become the gold standard for high-performance and high quality development on the Amiga!
Here's the latest. "Well its been a while but am finally ready to officially announce the latest ongoing project, Section Z. Capcom's prequel, of sorts, of Side Arms. Scorpion Engine ofc. Will run on OCS Amiga but as is typical with these kind of arcade ports, will need an 020 or better cpu and some fast ram to be fully playable. Will run like a brick on OCS with 1MB Chip and 1MB of other ram, but will run! Current progress is 50% or so finished. The map is done, need to complete stage 3, start stage 4 and 5. Lots of polish and other features to add but core game is in place Will have a playable demo for all in the coming days/weeks. Meanwhile, here is a vid of this in action above!"

Nice work. It does actually remind me of Blood Money
ReplyDeleteInded much like blood money, but less colorful.
ReplyDeleteStill this scorpion engine....but no one programs the normal way?
ReplyDeleteWhy should they if it saves time, making coding easier with the end result a damn fine game. If Scorpion Engine didn't exist there's a high chance you'd see a vast drop in game development.
DeleteWhat games in x68000 assembler have you published?
DeleteHello! Yes I understand both sides of the coin, the Scorpion Engine debate is ongoing. Nevertheless, these games still require a lot of effort to develop, it's not like it it has an automatic "make the game" button. A lot of prep goes into them and they take time. It will never ever replace coding a game from scratch and banging the hardware for optimum performance. That said, it is better that something exists than nothing, so without the engine yes, I think there would be drop off in game development on the platform. I do try and produce quality finished products, I guess this is more a conversion than a port, but it will be finished and playable, hopefully fun to!
ReplyDeleteScorpion Engine must be the most underrated game dev tool ever. There's huge potential here, just waiting to be fully exploited. If used the right way, it's very hard to tell if a game is Scorpion or hand coded. In fact, most people would never realize it if it wasn't for the well-known Scorpion splash-screen. We really should focus less on the tool and more on the outcome.
