Searching through the depths of itch io looking for any interesting games to write about, and I've come across a new update for the work in progress shooter for the Sega Master System/Mark III called 'Razing Core' by Badcomputer with music by LovePenguin. This game that is currently being worked on, not only looks pretty decent, but there's plenty of fun to be had, blasting waves of enemies, all the while listening to a rather upbeat master system soundtrack. To coincide with this news, provided below is some footage and game details.
Here's the latest developments via the discussion thread linked below " Recent testing has been good though so I'd like to use this thread to share my progress. I initially targeted 50FPS to allow for more CPU time but I've now been able to get good results at 60FPS so I will be targeting that instead. Play at 50FPS will just slow down. Currently I can support simultaneously 6 player bullets, around 6 enemies, and 6 enemy bullets. This may not sound like a lot but there's also a lot of mixing and matching I can try with larger enemies and more bullets to fill the screen. For example a small enemy is around same as ~3 enemy bullets in CPU time (a large enemy even more due to it's sprite drawing time).
"This also (surprisingly) seems to compare well to Power Strike II. A lot of clever tricks are used to make the game seem a lot more manic. But for example the player bullets often max out at 4-8 but shoot timing, selective drawing, and movement is used to make it seem like more. For example the multiple laser weapons are cycled and only one is used per frame. The primary weapon bullets are also reduced when there is a lot of secondary bullets or orbiting crystals. Enemy spawn timing is also essential to maintain action, and this also relies on the enemies dying by the player to maintain FPS. If you play PSII with no death cheat and don't kill any enemies there is several huge CPU spikes even at 50FPS (but which are obviously unlikely to happen in a normal game)."
