The Commodore Amiga scene gets another addition, with the release of a performance recreation of the arcade classic, Moon Cresta. Developed by Johnny Acevedo under the Amiten Games banner, this "from-scratch" build serves as a free tribute to the 1980s Nichibutsu original and a salute to François Lionet, the creator of AMOS. Furthermore unlike many modern retro efforts, this project is not a code conversion or a simple port. Developer Johnny Acevedo meticulously reconstructed the game piece by piece to mirror the original arcade mechanics.
Achieving fluid, "arcade-perfect" 50 FPS gameplay on standard Amiga 1200 systems. By offloading roughly 99% of its vital game logic onto the Amiga Animation Language (AMAL) and trimming the main programming loop to a bare minimum, Amiten have effectively eradicated immersion-breaking micro-lags, even during real-time score updates. While core functions like collision detection, scoring, and audio cues are managed cleanly within AMOS BASIC, continuous QA testing on physical machines hopefully delivers a flawless, stutter-free performance. For retro enthusiasts running older hardware, the developers note that the build is currently limited to 25 FPS on the Amiga 500 due to ongoing optimization work, while original Amiga OCS models will require a minimum of Kickstart 2.00 paired with a 512KB + 512KB memory configuration to boot the game.
