JagDoomEX - The Jaguar port gets an improved fan-version that might be worth checking out

Here's something we don't feature very often as it's the turn of the Atari Jaguar with the updated release of JagDoomEX, a project designed to breathe new life into the classic 1994 Atari Jaguar version of DOOM. Spearheaded by ChillyWilly, who has worked on a number of other ports including the Vic-20, this release focuses on a massive overhaul of the game's audio and music systems, integrating collaborative work from developers like Joe (Chilly) and the JagDoomEvolved Team. Additionally, the project introduces a clever "music-aware" audio filtering system that throttles repetitive background sound effects only when music is active, preventing audio clutter during intense combat without altering the standard experience when playing with sound effects alone.

Original

Enhanced

Beyond audio fixes according to the creator(s), JagDoomEX delivers substantial runtime performance boosts through a clever optimization of the static heads-up display (HUD). Instead of repeatedly forcing the system to refresh unchanged status-bar elements every single frame, the game now only updates the parts of the HUD that actually alter, such as health or ammo counters. This technical rewrite relieves pressure on the Jaguar's Object Processor and DRAM, leaving more processing power available for the core rendering engine during busy gameplay scenes. The build wraps up these technical enhancements with practical gameplay additions, including optional Spectre demon behavior, fully customized support for the Atari Jaguar 6-button controller, and a stable framerate achieved by reverting past experimental timing bugs.

Current Status : Current testing shows:

  • Much better overall performance.
  • No current known music or sound issues.
  • Improved SFX/music behavior.
  • Jaguar specific popping issue addressed.
  • Failed custom d_main.c timing experiment reverted.
  • Static HUD performance improvement active.
  • Optional Spectre behavior available in-game.
  • Customized 6-button controller controls active.
