DUNE II - Westwood's incredible RTS could be getting an Amiga enhancement

Fans of classic real-time strategy are in for a treat, as Westwood Studios’ legendary 1992 title Dune II looks to be getting an Amiga enhancement via Foxman. A new enhancement mod built directly into the original Amiga executable. Rather than rebuilding the game from scratch or porting it to a new engine, this ambitious project aims to respect the native visual presentation and core gameplay while retrofitting it with much-needed modern controls. The current milestone of the project is the successful implementation of multi-selection. Players will finally be able to drag-select rectangles, shift-click units, and issue collective movement or attack commands—a leap forward from the tedious unit-by-unit micro-management of the original release.

While this is still in an early work in progress state, cracking the multi-selection system paves the way for a host of highly anticipated quality-of-life upgrades. Foxman's extensive roadmap features staple RTS mechanics that became industry standards long after 1992, including hotkey control groups, production queues, factory rally points, and attack-move commands. The developer is also exploring the tantalizing possibility of unlocking the Fremen and Sardaukar as fully playable factions, utilizing code structures already left hidden inside the original game. Ultimately, the project's philosophy is to preserve the nostalgia of Dune II while removing the archaic interface friction for a smoother, enhanced tactical experience.

The current development build includes:

  • - Shift-click to add units to the selection
  • - Drag-select with a selection rectangle
  • - Multiple units selected at the same time
  • - Group MOVE commands
  • - Group ATTACK commands
  • - Multiple selection frames
  • - Clicking empty terrain clears the selection
  • - Original Dune II gameplay remains in place

Planned / possible next features

  • - Ctrl+1–9 control groups
  • - Double-click to select similar units
  • - Attack-Move
  • - Better group movement and simple formations
  • - Factory rally points
  • - Production queues
  • - Improved unit information
  • - Improved AI behaviour
  • - Optional higher unit limits
  • - More quality-of-life features without changing the original game too much
  • - A high-resolution version of *Dune II* with double the playfield size. The first step is done. Once both projects are finished, they will be merged into the largest *Dune II* mod native to the Amiga.
