GP Cars - A C64 racing game comes #2 at WiLD Demo Competition FOReVER 2023 - ROBOT

I'm a huge top down racing fan, from games such as Micro Machines to Supercars and Indy Heat on the Amiga. Well here's another top down racing game you might like to try that was recently released on the Commodore 64, and it's 'GP Cars' by LHS; A tiny sprite racing game that came 2nd place at the WiLD Demo Competition FOReVER 2023 - ROBOT. To coincide with this news, Saberman has done a new video where he crashes around the track a lot!

Here's what NecroPolo says about the game who did the music for GP Cars "LHS, mate, c'grats for finishing this game! That's been a long project, indeed. Respect for the massive effort and commitment. Thanks for including me in the making. It's been an honour and a fun journey. About ingame FX, everything that sounds extraordinarily good is Hermit's work. The sound design credit goes to him. Absolutely next level. That's the best non-digi 3-2-1, ever. On difficulty, as a sim racer, I can see race games from a different aspect. They should be challenging and this game puts up a nice fight while you're chasing the time limit. You have to be pretty fast if you wish to defeat it. I really like that".

  1. Track design looks like it actively discourages you from having fun.

    1. Hmm...what would make it fun for you? A more high-speed approach with less corners? I have only seen the video so far so can't say anything about the other tracks, but hopefully there's some variation. Looks like a cool game in any case!

  2. Looks they put all their time into the great music and forgot about making the game fun to play. The track needs some serious redesign and whats up with the speed of the car? slow....

    1. Do note however that this game was entered into a competition rather than a mass public release. There have been many games in the past entered into a comp, then later turned into a commercial success with many changes.. Usually called a Deluxe Edition :D. At the end of the day this came second!

  3. Think more Gran Turismo and less Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road. Which is not a bad thing IMO.

  4. For me is a very good game and reminds me Super Cars 1990 on C64, is awesome to have voice at the start of the race, maybe it is challenging if you not drive in excellent way for unlock other tracks, but i like this game.

  8. A really great game, great presentation. I usually suck in driving games, and this one is no exception.
(only one I was good in was Forza4, I was even visible on gsome lobal top10 lists. Good old days :-) )

In this game if I go fast, then I blow up my car with collisions, if I go slow and safe then I miss the deadline.
So maybe this game is not for me, but the music and the gfx is top notch! Congrats!
