Metro Siege - A 16-bit Beat 'em Up for Amiga, Neo Geo, and PC. Smashes Kickstarter goal!

Well this is incredible news, as the highly anticipated Metro Siege Kickstarter campaign has successfully smashed its initial funding goal, proving that the appetite for classic side-scrolling brawlers remains stronger than ever. Developed as a love letter to vintage arcade action by BitBeamCannon, this 16-bit co-op beat 'em up is currently being built for classic Amiga computers, Neo Geo hardware, and modern PC systems. While there is still 28 days to go, the Kickstarter stands at £24,885 pledged of a £13,817 goal!

In a consumer-friendly move, the developers announced a bundled access ecosystem. Gamers who purchase the digital PC version of Metro Siege via Steam or Itch.io will automatically receive access to all three platform versions. Production is moving at a steady pace, with the Amiga build scheduled to cross the finish line first. The PC and Neo Geo editions will follow shortly after as fully playable releases.

Unique Gameplay and Visual Shifts

While all three editions share a core roster of three selectable fighters, players will experience noticeable gameplay differences between versions:

  • Divergent Identities: The alternate variations for the core fighters will feature distinct designs depending on whether you play the Amiga or modern PC version.
  • Bespoke Encounters: Gameplay design, stage elements, and boss battles are being altered across platforms to guarantee a completely fresh experience on each system.

Pushing Retro Hardware to the Limit

Developing simultaneously for hardware from different eras requires drastically different creative solutions. The team detailed how they are maximizing the capabilities of both retro systems:
  • The Amiga Optimization: To cram a massive library of combat moves into the strict 1-megabyte memory limit of classic Amigas, the team engineered a modular animation system. Instead of full unique frames, individual body parts are dynamically repositioned and recycled. For purists, the Amiga version will be distributed as traditional disk images, a CD ISO file, and a WHDLoad package, making it instantly compatible with original hardware or your preferred Amiga emulator.
  • The Neo Geo Powerhouse: Free from strict memory restrictions, the Neo Geo version discards recycled sprites in favour of fully hand-drawn, full-frame character animations. The team is leveraging the console's legendary sprite processing power to deliver lush environments, expanded on-screen color palettes, a layered HUD that overlaps gameplay graphics, and a significantly richer variety of sound effects.
  • As for the PC via Steam or Itch.IO: It uses the same graphics as the Neo Geo version as a base,  augmenting it with a wide screen aspect ratio, many visual enhancements, the plan to add a "Chaos" difficulty option with many more enemies on screen to deal with.

This upcoming 16-bit co-op beat 'em up is positioning itself as an antidote to mindless, repetitive button mashing. Instead, it places a heavy premium on quick reflexes and deliberate decision-making. The game thrusts players into the middle of a city overrun by rival gangs following a massive, coordinated riot. To reclaim the streets and bring down the final crime boss and his henchmen, players must fight their way through a wide variety of diverse urban districts.

Dynamic Character Roster and Co-op Action
  • Players can navigate this hostile urban landscape completely solo or team up with a partner. Co-op play is fully supported either by handing control over to a CPU companion or plugging in a second gamepad for classic couch co-op.
  • The campaign features three completely unique playable characters, each boasting a distinct appearance and an entirely separate fighting style. Adding further variety, each fighter also comes with an alternate variation that completely changes how they look and behave on the battlefield.

Sophisticated, Fast-Paced Combat Mechanics

Rather than letting players mindlessly hammer the attack button, Metro Siege rewards engaged, fast-paced decision-making with an arsenal of offensive and defensive tools, including punches, kicks, knees, stun moves, special attacks, and devastating elbow drops.

The game’s deep combat engine is built around high-stakes risk and reward:
  • Layered Defenses: Players can block weak incoming attacks entirely. However, stronger enemy strikes will break through your guard, causing partial damage and knocking your character backward.
  • The Perfect Parry: Timing a block perfectly to the exact split-second an attack lands triggers a parry. This flawless defensive maneuver allows for an immediate counter-attack that inflicts bonus damage, while simultaneously rewarding the player by restoring a small amount of health and special meter.
  • Downed-Enemy Tactics: The battlefield remains active even when opponents hit the floor. Players can kick downed enemies, throw other gang members directly onto them, or execute a crushing knee-drop.
  • High-Stakes Ground Pound: While the knee-drop deals the highest potential ground damage, it carries an immense risk—if the enemy rolls out of the way before impact, you will injure yourself instead.
Escalating Street Warfare

  • As players push deeper into the city's gang-controlled territory, the difficulty dynamically scales. Enemies do not just become bullet sponges; instead, they grow significantly more skilled, adopting entirely new combat styles as the game progresses to keep the challenge fresh and unpredictable.
  • With its focus on sophisticated counter-attacks, evasive maneuvers, and highly tactical ground-game options, Metro Siege aims to deliver a fiercely engaging experience that honors the golden age of arcade brawlers while introducing modern mechanical precision.
And that's all there is to say about this Kickstarter, and while it has smashed its goal, it's still worth checking it out (HERE) to further support what looks to be an incredible brawler!
