Nibbler - An in-progress port of the classic Arcade Game Nibbler for Amiga OCS

And it's back to the Amiga we go, as looking through itch io we've found out that JOTD has released the first version for the in-progress port of the classic Arcade Game Nibbler for the Commodore Amiga. A game which was originally released back in 1982 in the Arcades and then also ported to systems such as the Amstrad CPC by Mosaik Software in 1984. To coincide with this news provided below is some early footage as well as game details from JOTD himself.

What was supposed to be a simple, non-AGA summer coding project, translating a 6502 game for the Amiga, quickly became a complex, deep-dive challenge. The project hit a major snag when recreating the snake's smooth, on-the-fly character redefinition, which is far too intensive for a straightforward transposition. To solve the issue, the developer replaced the complex dynamic tiles with Bobs for the head and tail, while optimizing colors with palette changes and utilizing the copper for one of the dual-playfield layers. Furthermore, sounds are simple but efficient. Game uses dual playfield to be able to simulate the 2 tile layers. He's also done the copper stuff for one layer (and it works well) but for the other he just applied a quantize and it's not the best ATM.

  1. sorry, the screenshot looks bad. Game has simple logic but displaying it properly is challenging because it uses charset redefinition extensively to animate the body and also head/tail, and this method cannot be transposed to the amiga easily/efficiently enough.
