OpenLara - A proof of concept 'Tomb Raider' for the Commodore Amiga [UPDATE]

BSzili is certainly no stranger to the Amiga scene, as not only did he release the Amiga port of Blake Stone Aliens of Gold, but there was also ports done of Exhumed / Powerslave, Wolfenstein 3D, BLOOD and even my personal favourite Shadow Warrior. Well it looks as if BSzili isn't done with the Amiga scene just yet, as he has released a proof of concept 'Tomb Raider' for the Commodore Amiga called 'OpenLara'. Although don't get too excited for a finished product any time soon, as in his words "This took me a few days. No sound, no full game, no warranty. I put it out there as a call to action: if anyone would be interested in helping out with the rasterizer let me know"

While there isn't much else to say about this proof of concept and what system requirements it has. Here's a little bit about Tomb Raider you may find interesting. "Lara Croft is a titular character of Core Design’s most memorable franchise Tomb Raider. Developed by experienced game developers from Derby, England, Tomb Raider was released in 1996. Tomb Raider was a huge success, selling over 7 million copies. During the first three months of 1997, Tomb Raider was the ninth-best-selling console game in the United States, with around 143,000 copies sold. This made it the highest-selling Playstation title for the period, in the United States. The game also received a “Platinum” sales award for PC and a “Gold” award for the Playstation".

DEV  :

  • this was cobbled together from the GBA and 32X version, it uses software rendering 320x200
  • it's aimed at low end systems, for your high end Arti is your man
  • if anyone wold like to tip me my website includes an option
  • and most importantly: I'm looking for help from someone who is good at 68020/68030 assembly
UPDATE : While this proof of concept was released some time ago, I've been told by Saberman that tron^fr also made available a recompiled version downloadable below.

Super excited by this. I always felt the Amiga should have had had a go on this unique Core franchise. Yay 🙌

(So far the gameplay is from WinUAE (030 settings). Tomorrow I will prepare a recording from the A1200/030/40MHz.) - Here's a Pistorm video https://youtu.be/bRT9PeHxQew

There was an Open Lara for PC by 'XProger' in 2001, almost the exact same proof of concept build, is this connected?

Interesting that you were able to port GBA and 32X version to the Amiga. Was the Openlara engine written in C? That would explain how it could be ported though I assume it's not that straightforward...

Yes it does silly billy. This is super impressive but it's not tailored to run on an A500. KK unleashed a great engine for the grand old machine.

Err, wut? Grind is super-impressive for all kinds of reasons, not least for running at a playable rate on an *A500*.

I think when Anon said "Grind doesn't look so impressive anymore.." they were getting at the fact that the engine for this being a real 3D engine has capabilities that Grind cant follow. The fact is that Grind has a very efficient engine capable of Wolfenstein/Doom graphics but it couldn't do this.

This "real A1200" is actually an Amiga 4000 030 expanded to 128 MB :) I would try it without textures!
