Moving away from the 16bit we now look towards the Amstrad with the latest release of Bomber Basic Amstrad, a new creation from Altanerus Dog. Built entirely in 100% Locomotive BASIC, this latest game is inspired by Hudson Soft's iconic 1983 classic Bomberman! What's more it's an incredibly lean 6.3 Kb release that serves as a playful proof of concept by the creator. While relying on traditional two-dimensional arrays and numerous code loops means the action is deliberately slow-paced, delivering a surprisingly addictive and playable experience across 9 distinct levels with an ending.
Players control a self-aware robot plotting a desperate breakout from an underground bomb factory. Equipped with an infinite supply of explosives and just three lives, you must navigate grid-like mazes to eliminate factory guards before an increasingly strict countdown timer expires. The gameplay introduces a clever tactical twist: once a bomb is dropped, it functions as a physical barrier to trap enemies, but it immediately vanishes from sight, forcing players to memorize its location before it detonates three seconds later. Offering a pure, nostalgic masterclass in working within old-school system limitations, this tiny BASIC clone challenges players to master their timing or risk getting caught in their own blast radius.
