Midwinter Fan Remaster - A brilliant Amiga game from my youth gets a fan remaster via Steam!

In 1989 a critically acclaimed game for the both the Amiga and Atari ST become a commercial hit with high ratings of well over 90%. Now, Mike Singleton’s legendary vision has returned to PC screens with the Steam early access launch of Midwinter Fan Remaster. This ambitious project brings back a staggering 160,000 square miles of frozen territory to explore, tasking players with building a resistance from 32 distinct survivors to halt an invading army. Because the original game blended strategy, stealth, and first-person shooting long before the industry even had names for those concepts, playing it today feels less like a retro throwback and more like discovering the direct blueprint for titles like Grand Theft Auto.

Developed entirely as a solo passion project, the remaster has officially entered Steam Early Access to ensure the community can help shape its final form. The creator opted for an open development model because the game's massive, systems-heavy world relies on unpredictable player choices that a single tester could never fully map out. Early adopters will get the unique chance to decide which complex gameplay mechanics get prioritised for deeper development next. For anyone who loves open-world games, this release offers a rare, hands-on look at the ancestor that started it all, complete with its unique mechanic of switching between different recruited characters as a massive war unfolds across the ice.

  • Midwinter's optional modern art mode uses character portraits, for both the playable characters and the enemy officers, that were produced with generative AI image tools during development. These are fixed image files included in the build; nothing is generated while you play.

  1. Good news. I never played this game on my Amiga because the frame rate was just way too low - obviously, this new version fixes that. I loved Lords of Midnight on my C64: a ground-breaking game in its day. RIP Mike Singleton.

    1. Same as! I think the only thing letting the game down is the AI character, looks wayy out of place! Hopefully DREvil fixes that :)
