In 1989 a critically acclaimed game for the both the Amiga and Atari ST become a commercial hit with high ratings of well over 90%. Now, Mike Singleton’s legendary vision has returned to PC screens with the Steam early access launch of Midwinter Fan Remaster. This ambitious project brings back a staggering 160,000 square miles of frozen territory to explore, tasking players with building a resistance from 32 distinct survivors to halt an invading army. Because the original game blended strategy, stealth, and first-person shooting long before the industry even had names for those concepts, playing it today feels less like a retro throwback and more like discovering the direct blueprint for titles like Grand Theft Auto.

Midwinter Fan Remaster - A ground-up PC remaster of Mike Singleton's 1989 classic is in the works!
Throughout this month we've featured a number of open sourced remakes. From games such as the brilliant Transport Tycoon on the PC, to Rollercoaster Tycoon and one of my personal favorite's called Diggers. Well thanks to a heads up via the EAB forums, it looks as if Mike Singleton's 1989 classic Midwinter is also getting a full PC remaster by DrEvil. A faithful recreation in which the creator says has blessing by Chilli Hugger (who held the remake rights).
Midwinter - A possible remake?
Another classic game remake could at some point be coming to a system near you. I'm sure many of you will know of the game from which this screenshot came from, yes it's Midwinter. But who will remake such a game? The Indie Developer who has his sights set on Midwinter, is none other than Christopher Jon Wild who was responsible for the brilliant remake of Mike Singleton's classic The Lords of Midnight. But, the project isn't exactly in development just yet....
