Vette! - A 90's game by Spectrum Holobyte arrives on the Amiga via Vesuri

Welcome to the Commodore Amiga port of Vette!, the classic 1991 Macintosh Color street racer. Originally developed by Sphere, Inc. and published by Spectrum HoloByte, this new project brings the full 1.02 version of the game over to the Amiga by executing the original 68000 codebase through a clever custom implementation of the Macintosh system services. Players get behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Corvette to tear across the open streets of San Francisco, choosing from all four original single-player courses. While network multiplayer didn't make the cut, technical execution includes graphics using native bitplanes, a hardware mouse pointer and full audio driven by the machine's signature Paula sound chip.

For those of you who remember reading preview features for an official Amiga release in old print magazines, this fan-made port finally delivers on a decades-old promise. However, revisiting this specific era of flat-shaded vector graphics highlights a classic division in vintage racing design. While the massive, open 3D rendering of San Francisco provides a sense of freedom, players used to the buttery-smooth speed of classics like Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge might find the gameplay a bit jarring. Much like the original Test Drive, the sheer computational weight of calculating 3D polygons on unaccelerated hardware means enduring a noticeably low, choppy frame rate. Even so, the sheer charm of exploring a blocky, digitized California coast makes it a fascinating curiosity well worth checking out.

  1. No support for bsdsocket.library, no download - simple as that. One of Vette's strongest features is its net play. Keeping AmigaOS users out of the loop is basically an insult to the community 😑.

  2. Oh God, it's on fricking GitHub. Cue half an hour of trying to figure if there even IS an executable, never mind work out which file it is.

    2. Since you seem to strugge - here is the standard AmigaOS LhA archive, along with source code if you don't have a Git-client on your Amiga:

      No multiplayer support, though 😐.
