For many months we were talking about the fabulous C64 game 'L'abbaye Des Morts'; a game which was developed by Antonio Savona, with graphics, music, sfx by Saul Cross and Gryzor, full permission of Locomalito, as an Indie Retro News game of the year for 2019. Well if you haven't played the game now's your chance, because as of this week you can now download the game for free!

ZX Spectrum Game of the Year 2019 Indie Retro News special!
![]() |
| The ZX Spectrum game of the year!! What could it be? Read on to find out! |
With the festive season over and being well into a new year (though that said, I still have Christmas cake in my cupboard - true story) I'd say it's time we have a look at some of the best releases for the Spectrum in 2019. The year saw the release of some new developers, some returning and also some sequels to previous game releases. A quick browse through the 2019 Speccy library will have you mightily impressed and amazed in equal measure. When you look at some of the quality in releases and how far some can push the Speccy's limits well, we're looking at mindblowing stuff and things we'd never had dreamed of seeing back in its heyday.
Well, let's get down to some games see what we can see. And play. I've compiled a list of my Top 9 ZX Spectrum games for 2019 - there were so many out there to choose from and it was really hard to whittle down and apologies if your favourite game isn't here. It doesn't mean it's not worthy, it's just there has to be limit and if I covered them all my fingers would wear down from my keyboard, and then where would I be? Hospital probably, I hear you say but enough of that; let's take a look.
2019 C64 Yearly Roundup and GOTY Nominees
Hello everyone and welcome to my 2019 C64 roundup. We’ll take a look at some of my highlights for the year, some of Neil’s picks of the year and announce the Indie Retro News GOTY nominees.
2018 was an incredible year for C64, and 2019 did not disappoint either. In fact we covered more C64 game releases this year in Indie Retro News, than any year since I joined in 2015… and we probably saw more releases this year than any year since the C64’s commercial hay day. We’d also be treated this year to the return of the RGCD 16KB Cartridge game development competition. The competition in the past has been responsible for bringing us tons of amazing games, many of which would get professional produced physical editions. Including some legendary C64 releases like Tiger Claw, Power Glove, Platman Worlds, C64anabalt, Super Bread Box, Micro Hexagon and P0 Snake.
C64 GOTY Winner Announcement!
2018 was such a great year for C64, and I'm sure it'll keep getting better in 2019. Recently we published a fab list of game releases both physical and download games, and the list is crammed full of awesome games. In the article I published my list of nominees for Game of the Year, and last week I announced the winner live on Twitch.
