RGCDs Conga Combat for C64 + 27 more minigames released today - Huge 4KB compo update
UPDATE: Please note this article was originally written to cover just one game as 28 games were labelled as Coming soon on Reset's itch.io page and in the comments they said it would be 1-2 weeks for them, whilst this game had already been released. It was only after I published this draft that those pesky Aussies decided to drop all 28 right away to beat the crackers.
C64 Weekly Roundup - Ultimate-64, 4KB Crappy Games, IK Ultimate and more!
Hello and welcome to what I hope I can make a regular fixture here at Indie Retro News. As new C64 games, scene releases, hardware, competitions and general C64 news become more and more frequent, it's becoming harder to cover everything which goes on in individual postings. So I'm going to try and wrap up everything in one weekly post, so it should be easier to stay on top of the latest goings on. Of course if anything major comes in, we'll still feature breaking news stories separately.
International Karate Ultimate Released - Feature C64 Roundup!
Following on from last week's preview, you can now play the full release of International Karate Ultimate. Tombstones - Survive retirement day with some quick gunslinging skills. New on C64
Tombstones - Retirement Day is a brand new C64 game from developers Megastyle and Presented by Reset Magazine. It was also recently previewed in FREEZE! C64 August issue. The game is releaesed with Reset Magazine issue 10, but a sneak preview of the game has been uploaded to CSDB, along with SIDs of the game. Although this preview does seems to have developer support, as no flame wars have started in the comments yet! Coded by Dogster, and Sound and Graphics by Rotteroy of C64 demo veterans: Megastyle. The loading graphic pictured above alone is a masterpiece.
Reset 4kb Coding Competition Causes Avalanche of Mini Games to Hit C64
Back in May Reset Magazine announced their "Crap Game Compo 2016": The only constraints would be the devs' imaginations, and of course the tiny 4kb file size. Now the competition has closed, we can play all the games which made it on time, and try to pick our favorites. Amongst the best is "Goblin", by Pond Software. Simple platforming action, where you must collect all the items, avoid the gribbly-esque baddies and, and escape to the exit to reach the next level.. yes they squeezed a beautiful looking multi level game complete with animations and sound into 4kb!
Hover Raider RX +2H - River Raid meets Flying Shark on the C64
Some of my earliest game development memories consisted of messing around in Sensible Software's amazing Shoot Em Up Construction Kit (SEUCK) on my Commodore 64. The well presented and easy to use graphical interface really made it as simple as possible to create and share your own Shoot-em-ups. Ok, the games would never really be as hardcore as dedicated shoot-em-ups written from scratch, like R-Type or Nemesis. Collectible power-ups, or horizontal scrolling would need some extra assembly programming to implement, and parallax scrolling was probably a little beyond the software's capabilities. But as games are still being released using the software today, the legacy of SEUCK lives on. As this SEUCK Trainers United release proves.
Rock Maze Reset Edition - Graham Axten overhauls a C64 Boulder Dash clone and it's good!
Way back in 1996, Graham Axten (TOKI) made a cool Bolder Dash clone called Rock Maze, in which you needed to guide your character deep into the underground digging through the dirt and collecting all the diamonds without getting squashed. What added to the re-playability of the game was the use of passwords with each level completion, so you could always come back to a level that caused you all that grief in the first place. But putting the original aside for the time being, the news of this weekend and a heads up by Vintageisthenewold, is the overhauled release of ' Rock Maze : Reset Edition ' which has been released by the Reset Magazine Staff from Graham Axten and is also available on the Reset #08 Mix-i-Disk.
