DOOM on the ZX Spectrum 128k by Digital Reality ( tzx version recovered )

Doom was never officially released on the ZX Spectrum , nor was it released on any other system of that time. Doom was just way beyond in computer development, but now you can play it in very retro style, thanks to Digital Reality. This looks as if it was officially released on the ZX in all it's first person goodness, as it's a damn fine Remake indeed. But don't get too excited, as although you can play the game, it still believed to be just a Demo and you'll most likely need an emulator or a real 128k speccy too.

Pentacorn Quest - A great ZX Spectrum homebrew appears on the MSX1

Way back in 2015 we announced the release of a gorgeous ZX Spectrum game by José Ignacio Rodríguez and powered by The Mojon Twins called 'Pentacorn Quest'; A platformer which was regarded as a highly recommended and fun for all the family game. Well fast forward to this week however, and we've recently been informed by ArnaudDeKlerk, that Pentacorn Quest has now been released for the MSX1 via the MSXdev23 competition by Robosoft.To coincide with this news, we have some further information about the game below including another screenshot and a video soon from Saberman.

FreeCol - Open source Colonization gets a BIG 0.13.0 release

It has been many months since the previous build, the latest open source colonization "FreeCol" 0.13.0 is now available for download. Based on Sid Meier's Colonization (Microprose) in which the player manages the cross-Atlantic expansion of an established nation in the service of the Crown. This is an open source version which is also very similar to Civilization. Starting off with just a few colonists and looking for new lands, will you succeed for a new nation or be wiped out by the natives.

Top 11 Amstrad CPC Games of 2020

The year 2020 was a bit of a rubbish time for most people of the world... but there was some bright lights that were shone. Coders for the Amstrad CPC got hard at work and produced some of the finest games seen in many years. The amount of quality in particular was a step ahead of previous years, so making this Top 11 was trickier than ever before to wheedle down to the best 11.

Over the years there's certainly been a surge in home made cases and internal changes to bring the Raspberry Pi into an almost seamless look giving us the impression we are playing on an old console. This all fused together with so many games through Pi Retro Emulation that no original console or games are needed. I mean seriously, if you didn't want a NES or SNES mini, you could buy a tiny NES case, bang a Raspberry Pi inside, add a few extra parts, install someone software, thousands of roms and you have your own emulation station running through a HDMI TV!

Ambermoon open source remake in progress of a fantastic CRPG! (PC/Windows)

Originally released in 1993 for the Amiga by Thalion Software, Ambermoon was the second part of an unfinished trilogy and sequel to Amberstar that was only released in Germany. In was an incredible RPG for its time, and featured 3D graphics that were considered revolutionary for the Amiga, but sadly for the company it couldn't save them from collapse.

Espitenen and Mr. Pimponen - New NES game from The Mojon Twins

While many of you are looking forward to playing Malasombra from 4mhz, there's another game you might be interested in playing for the NES, and that's the free game of 'Espitenen and Mr. Pimponen' ; a brand new game from the Mojon Twins,  powered by Pantanow Engine rev. 5, Neslib & Famitone2, who were also behind games such as Cheril the Writer, Mojonian Tales, and yes even Bootèe!

Could the Laser Disc version of Dragon's Lair be coming to the C64 or is this really JUST FOR FUN?

Now I remember Dragon's Lair very well, from the Amstrad version with the jumping of platforms or trying to stay on the spinning disk without being blown off, or the interactive animated version which appeared as a laserdisc in which you needed to press a specific direction at the right time to survive. Both were simply brilliant games, but what has surprised me today is Antonio Savona has shown the possibility of Dragons Lair Laserdisc working on the C64 albeit in Black and White.

Top 11: ZX Spectrum to Amstrad CPC Ports

During the 8-bit home computer heyday of the eighties, Amstrad fans noticed a phenomenon that continued all the way up until the CPC's discontinuation. Many games were released that didn't appear to be optimized for the system's strengths and thus lots of lackluster games came to the party. This was eventually explained to the common user that the games, were ported from a rival machine... the ZX Spectrum.

PLAY Expo Blackpool 2018 - Gaming Youtuber Interviews

Every year since 2012, Replay Events has held the annual gaming extravaganza PLAY Expo in the somewhat rough but lovable Blackpool. 2018 was no exception, and so I attended for a forth time. On this visit however, I intended to seize the chance to interview some prolific and up and coming gaming youtubers. I talked wrestling games with Kim Justice, video scripting with Slopes Game Room, the WiiU with Top Hat Gaming Man and Ghost n' Goblins with Octavius Kitten, plus much more. A total of 7 interviews in total, split into 3 films. These guys create some excellent gaming content, a bit of something for everyone in the retro sphere.

New Amiga 500 Case kickstarter teased?

If you've been following Indie Retro News throughout these last few years, you would've by now read about A1200.net's kickstarter regarding both the new A1200 cases and the keycaps. Well most of us have already received those new Amiga 1200 cases much to the delight of the Amiga community, we are still waiting for our keycaps to go with our stunning new case such as black keys to replace yellow. However if you don't have an Amiga 1200 and sitting by your side is an older Amiga 500 model, you'll be pleased to know we've just learnt from Steve through our Facebook group, that a new Amiga 500/+ Case Kickstarter will be announced at some point this year. - So keep watching this space!

Top 11: Terrible Amstrad CPC Games... A Fan's List.

Back in the days of the 8-bit wars, quality control was not a stringent as it is now, and many games were developed under restrictive conditions or tight deadlines, or the wrong programmer was chosen. Whatever the reasons, many games released were, to put it bluntly, total garbage. Honest fans of their respective systems will fondly look back on these mess of bytes, so here I give you my Top 11 Terrible Amstrad CPC Games. This list is a combination of my personal preference, magazine reviews and polls conducted in the Amstrad forums, and features a host of Youtube CPC fans including Xyphoe, Chinnyvision and Zoe Kirk-Robinson. Project-X - An Amiga Shoot em up you've just got to play

One of the greatest Shoot em ups I can remember, wasn't the all time classic R-Type, but Team 17's Project-X, which was not only released on the Amiga in 1992, but later ported to MS-DOS. It was a game for its time that excelled in graphics, sound and awesome wave blasting enemies that not only featured cool weaponry, but great powerups such as side defence, missiles and even speed ups. But if you've never played it and want to have a go, then Gamesnostalgia have done a PC/MAC packed version with inclusive Amiga emulator and game file.

Genesia - If you loved Populous or Settlers then check this Amiga-PC classic out

In 1993 Microids and Software Toolworks released a brilliant strategy game called Ultimate Domain (Genesia) for the Amiga. It was very similar to other classic strategy games of that time, as you started in the 17th century and had to colonize the new world, but also having to search for 'The Seven Jewels of Genesia'. It was one of my most favourite strategy games of all time and I was rather pleased to hear from our good friends The Company.PL, that they have made available the Amiga to PC playable release that everyone can pick up and play without setting up emulators.

H.P. Lovecraft in Text mode - Final push for a unique horror Kickstarter campaign

Over these past few days we've been getting reports of a new Kickstarter that takes the influential writing from the famed horror writer H.P Lovecraft, while telling a story in dark and rather creepy PETSCII C64 ASCII artwork. And sure enough we got the heads up today from QUESTRON of their in final days Kickstarter, that aims to bring you a Hardcover book with a gold foil cover (210 x 285 mm), from two of his more obscure writings, “Dagon” and “Nyarlathotep” with PETSCII.

Indie Retro News is going to PLAY Margate!

We are a huge fan of retro gaming conventions, especially ones that are full to the brim with retro games and hardware mixed up with a little bit of indie. Sure we've seen Eurogamer (although I wasn't impressed), I've always had a soft spot for GEEK in Margate, as I can relive days gone by and clicky joysticks.  Well after our recent feature of GEEK 2015 which was a big let down compared to their previous events, with it being a more modern oriented show (Lots of PS4's/Xbox ones!). The true retro spirit is coming home as from tomorrow! Yes indeed, 'PLAY Margate' the original organizers of GEEK will be at the Winter Gardens, Margate from the 21st to the 23rd of August.

As such Indie Retro News will be there and we personally can't wait to show you all the awesomeness this show has to provide when we come back.
