Populous - A brilliant Strategy game reviewed by DarkwyndPT

Well, it isn’t too hard to figure out which Bullfrog game I’ll start reviewing for this retrospective. And it’s only fair that I start with Bullfrog’s first and possibly biggest success ever: Populous.

Populous is a managerial/strategy game developed by Bullfrog and published by Electronic Arts. It was originally released in 1989 for the Amiga, Atari ST and DOS. The following year, it was ported to the Genesis/Megadrive, PC-98, Sharp X68000 and the SNES/Super Nintendo. In 1991, it was ported to the Master System and Turbografx-16. In 1992, it was ported to the Acorn 32-bit and the following year for the Macintosh. In 2011, it was re-released for Windows.

Motkonqe - A new MSX homebrew inspired by strategy classics such as Populous

Indie Retro News is back from our holidays and already we have some new gaming news for you, with this weeks announcement of Motkonqe on the MSX 1. Classed as a top down real time strategy game, this latest release although it doesn't look like it, has some very strong inspirations to that of the classic game ' Populous '. Basically the idea behind this nifty little title, is to create a small civilisation and to use your people to crush the opposition.

Genesia - If you loved Populous or Settlers then check this Amiga-PC classic out

In 1993 Microids and Software Toolworks released a brilliant strategy game called Ultimate Domain (Genesia) for the Amiga. It was very similar to other classic strategy games of that time, as you started in the 17th century and had to colonize the new world, but also having to search for 'The Seven Jewels of Genesia'. It was one of my most favourite strategy games of all time and I was rather pleased to hear from our good friends The Company.PL, that they have made available the Amiga to PC playable release that everyone can pick up and play without setting up emulators.

Populous - Peter Molyneux godly classic appears on the C64!

If the news of the Maniac Mansion Demo Disk  or the Grubz (Worms Clone) for the C64 didn't blow you away, then the latest C64 preview of Populous probably will. First released in 1989 for the Amiga and then ported over to other systems in the early 90's such as the Acorn 32-bit, Atari ST and DOS. Populous was developed by Peter Molyneux for Bullfrog in which you play as a god, gaming against other gods in a celestial game of conquest. But what didn't happen was a version for the C64, until now!

Genesia - If you loved Populous then check this Amiga classic out (PC Playable)

This game was so much fun for it's time and I still remember it well today, this is Genesia which was developed by Microids in 1992/3 for the Amiga/PC. A game which starts in the 17th century in the colonies of the new world, where the player has four settlers and a few raw materials to begin a new life, a new settlement. Your goal, apart from building a grand settlement is to find the (Crystals of Neort) which have been scattered across the land. So will you be able to manage your economy, technology and last but not least your military forces in the hope to finding these Crystals? Thanks to The Company.pl, which have just released/updated to version 2.6 you can now play this on your PC with higher graphical filters.

Reprisal - A godly game inspired by Populous with a Demo!

This is Reprisal, a godly game inspired by Populous in which you, as a god, must use your powers to terraform the land and lead your followers to victory over the enemy forces. Reprisal by ReprisalUniverse, started off as an in development browser based title and very quickly became rather popular, to the point of now appearing on Desura, and needing your votes on Steam Greenlight. You have, just like in Populous, the ability to change the land around you, the better the land the more developed the buildings and the more people that appear. But that's just one part of the game, the ultimate enjoyment comes about in the power at your disposal from raising the sea water level to drown people, burning the land with raging fire, bring down a bolt of lightning to strike the earth, and commanding meteor showers to destroy an entire civilization in an instant. But there's more!

Project GODUS - A reinvention of Populous ( Strategy/god sim ) + Kickstarter

In the last month or so we've had some incredible games come up on Kickstarter, however it just got better as a game called Project GODUS from 22cans and Peter Molyneux has been announced. You might ask why should some of us care?, well it looks to be a Reinvention of Populous for today's systems!. Populous was a computer game developed by Bullfrog in 1989 and is regarded by many as the first PC God game also winning a lot of awards in 1991.
