Life on Mars - A Metroidvania for the Sega Mega Drive from the creators of Metal Dragon has been announced

If games such as Metroid are to your liking and you have a Sega Mega Drive or Genesis, then it would be well your time checking out the latest footage for the upcoming game of ' Life on Mars '; A game developed by Kai Magazine that was previously released for the MSX2 and remade for the PC. According to the creators, Life on Mars is not only an action platformer that features high quality graphics and music, but the setting is a bit "Aliens" and other classic 80's sci-fi movies. To coincide with this news, a brand new trailer has been released showing the intro and the first 20 minutes of gameplay!

Virgil's Purgatory - Don't lose your head in this new MSX game from Amaweks

If you have a ZX Spectrum at hand or an emulator installed, chances are you if you were reading IndieRetroNews at the time, you would've come across Amawek's excellent horror game called 'Virgil's Purgatory'; a game which celebrated the Modern Art Week in Brazil. Well fast forward to this month, and thanks to Amaweks giving us the heads up just recently, we have been told that same game has also been released for the MSX. As in the words of the creator "Virgil's Purgatory for ZX and MSX is a metroidvania platformer. The game is based on the 2016 PC version, but has a lot of differences in graphics and level design".

Even more retro gaming news has just appeared in our inbox, as if you have a ZX Spectrum at hand or an emulator installed, you might want to play this new game from Amaweks called ' Virgil's Purgatory'; a horror game that celebrates the Modern Art Week in Brazil which is set to take place next year and will be 100 years old. Do note however the game does have a more detailed write up in how it came to be, but it's incredibly confusing and I was rather lost at "Brazilian Modernists made it clear that it was necessary to "anthropophagize" the foreigner, "eat them", and thus give birth to the new"

Lester - A brand new metroidvania announcement for the C64!

While some of you including myself, are looking forward to playing the upcoming game of Leap!; A high quality C64 title via KnifeGrinder which is a tribute to Bounder; a game released in 1985 by Gremlin Graphics. There's another game you might like to keep an eye on while it is still in development, and that's Lester, a new metroidvania for the C64 that puts you in control of the AR2020, a robot sent to liberate a space station taken over by an evil AI.

Only a teaser trailer released so far but the announcement comes in the form of a new joint effort in the form of Mawilo game studio between @Tokinsom @7SoulDesign @OneRumor and if their combined previous efforts are anything to go by, this will be something to watch out for

Nightkeep - Retro inspired metroidvania-like platformer gets greenlit!

Over the years there has been countless metroidvania games aiming for that greenlight approval rating, but this time there's no need for a hopeful thumbs up, as Nightkeep by PixelABCD and team is a Steam Greenlight success and is coming to a PC near you. In this game you play as Arietta, a huntress, who must traverse through a beautiful and fictional medieval fantasy world completing both main quests and side quests for rewards and experience.

Jester's Quest - Fairy tale metroidvania is aiming for a Steam Greenlight success

I thought it best for the time being to put aside the latest homebrew developments and look towards Steam Greenlight for my gaming fix, with the newly added retro-ish metroidvania platformer ' Jester's Quest ' developed by Fendi. This is a fairy tale game with some RPG elements, that puts you in control of a lovable Jester that not only has to save the Kingdom, but also has to get the princess!

Into The Rift - An awesome pixelated action platformer teased!

There are many platformers out there, some are very simplistic, while others are both high in graphical design and playability. One such game ' Into The Rift ' looks to have everything you need in a platformer and that little bit more. Designed by WestonPDX, Into The Rift is a running, jumping and weapon slashing metroidvania that has a number rather interesting moves that is sure to make this game a bit of a jaw-dropper. Shrubnaut - Hook your way through a cute metroidvania

It's a Sunday and for some of us a bit drab and boring, so to lighten the mood with a bit of entertainment how about a free game for PC and Mac that was made in 6 days for a self-imposed GAME•A•WEEK challenge? This is ' Shrubnaut ', a rather cute and highly enjoyable metroidvania, in which you need to use your powerful hook to grab onto the landscape to explore a space terrarium and find all its secrets!

Corpses 'N Souls - A 2D Metroidvania with jaw dropping detail

As I'll be with family this weekend, I thought I'd finish off with a rather gorgeous looking game that fuses a 2D Metroidvania with Diablo like ARPG mechanics, developed with full DX11 in mind, plus OpenGL and 64bit support! Heart Forth, Alicia - Beautifully retro 90s inspired Metroidvania RPG (Kickstarter/Steam Greenlight) - UPDATE

Through this year we've had many Metroidvania style games trying to take that top spot of retro excellence, and Heart Forth, Alicia, by Alonso Martin may do just that. It's a beautiful looking game with plenty of that 90's retro charm, as the developer states : The story unfolds amidst the repercussions of centuries worth of struggle, strife, and bloodshed between cultures, races and worldviews. But above all else, it's an epic Metroidvania RPG that combines timeless 16- and 32-bit gameplay, modern mechanics, and a set of unique, intertwining stories to take you on a fantastic journey. So for me, just another Kickstarter backed game that I'm looking forward to play, and if they reach $60,000 it will be a success! Oh and don't forget to vote it up on Steam Greenlight!
