IndieBundle.org - A new way to do a bundle!

A new Indie bundle scheme has been created that might appeal to a wider audience. Instead of Indie developers selling their products via one bundle, IndieBundle.org sets each bundle apart by Genre. For example if you prefer platform games, then the platformer bundle will be more to your liking.  Each bundle is also available on either (not both) the Desura or Steam platform, when either has been purchased the keys are sent to your email. The games don't disappoint either!

Asylum - Horror Kickstarter Success!

Great news for the developers of Asylum, a new scary as hell horror first person point-and-click adventure game by the same designers as Scratches (Senscape). As they have just had a successful kickstarter with $119,426 pledged of a $100,666 goal. It's so great to see another horror game from these guys is on the way, as Scratches was one hell of a well made horror adventure. Asylum is a psychological horror adventure inspired by H. P. Lovecraft set in a massive, decaying mental institute.

Empire Eden - Run N' Gun/ARPG - Kickstarter

An ambitious project by a trio called New Horizon Gaming LLC, consisting of a programmer, pixel artist and a map maker - Empire Eden - has recently begun to request funding via Kickstarter. The ARPG, Run n' gun blend of play and a large amount of naked pixel art are sure to appeal to the masses!

Pioneers - turn-based game with RPG elements

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this game was Pirates, it also has the same graphical feel as other long since past colonization dos based titles. I just love the way this game looks and it has a ton of potential, this is Pioneers, a turn-based game with rpg elements.

As the game begins it's up to you to pick the right crew, You need someone who's good with weapons and hunting, someone who is good with carpentry, someone who can draw maps, someone who could easily learn native languages and so on. Once that's done, you put them on a ship and head out as a Pioneer to an unknown land.

The Mash Bundle‏ at the Indie Royale

A new Indie Royale bundle has appeared, which is a mash-up of games including Telltale's Strong Bad, Guns of Icarus, Kung Fu Strike: The Warrior's Rise, Krunch and Delve Deeper.

Paranautical Activity - Roguelike FPS

In the style of Serious Sam with tons of enemies attacking you in a first person shooter style, comes Paranautical Activity. The graphics are voxel based so it feels like minecraft with guns, but if you want a late evening crazy fast paced game, this could well suit your gaming needs.

Forge - Adventure fan-made sequel to LucasArts, Loom

Adventure fans rejoice! A fan made sequel to Loom, LucasArts’ 1990 adventure-game masterpiece is in development and this looks to amaze the fan base of any LucasArts adventure gamer. Apparently Loom was supposed to have been followed by two additional stories, each following a different protagonist; but these games were sadly never made. Thus feeling the love lost, the team behind this fan based sequel, hope to carry on the story in the same vintage pixel-art style of the early 1990s.

Final Fight Gold - Champion Edition : Beat em up (REMAKE)

Some have already classed Final Fight Gold - Champion Edition as one of the best homebrew beat em up games released so far and it's not difficult to see why. With 7 characters from both Final Fight 1, 2 and 3 and even Street Fighter, kicking ass against 42 classic enemies/bosses, you will not find any other Final Fight remake of this magnitude.  The backgrounds and stages are set to a high standard with 28 backgrounds and 5 stages with multiple paths that's sure to keep you busy.

Retrobooster - Multi-Directional Shoot em up (0.6 DEMO UPDATE)

Website

World Heroes Supreme Justice - Beat em up

This game takes us back to the days of Street Fighter, yes it's a Beat em up. World Heroes Supreme Justice, developed by magggas uses the OpenBOR engine and has great graphics, great choice of locations and above all great game play. You have the choice list of 5 characters, each with their own attacks. The control system is that of four buttons to perform moves and combos (are the usual A, S, D + F to parry)

Steam Marines - squad-based Roguelike

I was checking the latest releases and came across this pretty damn fine Roguelike that looked like a mix of Megatraveller and Space Marines. This is Steam Marines, a squad-based Roguelike being developed by Worthless Bums. Although it's still in development, it has a really nice art style of that of a 2D retro game intermixed with turn based action.

Driftmoon - Adventure RPG

This is Driftmoon, developed by Instant Kingdom. A game with a quirky style and a certain Ultima look about it. An adventure roleplaying game, full of exploration,  surprises, captivating stories, quests and charming characters. You will come across a grand adventure of at least 10-30 hours of enjoyable fun in a magical world seeming with great possibilities.

Games I remember, with a remake - Dungeon Master

Well the time has finally arrived, it's time for Dungeon Master. The most epic of Dungeon Crawlers ever created, a game so popular that if you went onto any gaming forum today and said Dungeon Master you'd probably get every retro gamer going in a posting frenzy. But what is Dungeon Master? Dungeon Master is an early grid-based 3D real time rpg, that was first developed and published by FTL Games for the Atari ST in 1987.  It was so popular that it sold over 40,000 copies and became the ST's best selling product of all time, but even though it's home was the Atari ST, it went onto other platforms.

Monty On The Run C64 Game Music Remix by Mark Birch

It's remix time and here we have the 1985 game Monty On The Run from the C64, remixed by Mark Birch. You may be surprised to know that I actually get emails asking for more remixes posted on Indie Retro News. So here's another music treat, turn it up!

Heroine's Quest - 2D Adventure in a Sierra style

Many readers of our website do love a good Adventure, especially when it's very much like Quest for Glory or Kings Quest, thanks to talent of Sierra. So now we have a new 2d Adventure on the way from Crystal Shard, which is proud to present Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, an adventure/RPG indie freeware game in the style of Sierra's classics.

Father Jonah Saves the Day - ZX Spectrum game Wizard’s Lair tribute (Browser Based)

Not exactly a remake but a tribute to a very classic game called Wizard's Lair, released in 1985. This was a January 2013 entry for One Game A Month, but it was actually done in less than a week. It uses the bonus theme for January (‘portcullis’) and it’s a tribute to Stephen Crow’s magnificent ZX Spectrum game Wizard’s Lair. What I like about this tribute is it works in any browser, yes you can play it at work ;)

Signs of Life - 2d survival sandbox platformer

This is an interesting looking game that takes action and survival elements from other great titles such as Abuse, Terraria and Cortex Command, then blending them in together to create Signs of Life. This nifty mix is a game of 2d survival, sandbox, platforming set in the distant future.  You'll be exploring procedurally generated worlds full of meaningful handcrafted and procedurally generated content and a wide variety of creatures, some of which don't even want to taste your insides!

Midwinter - A possible remake?

Another classic game remake could at some point be coming to a system near you. I'm sure many of you will know of the game from which this screenshot came from, yes it's Midwinter. But who will remake such a game? The Indie Developer who has his sights set on Midwinter, is none other than Christopher Jon Wild who was responsible for the brilliant remake of Mike Singleton's classic The Lords of Midnight. But, the project isn't exactly in development just yet....

Sabre Wulf is back! It's remake time

It's currently 3am and this awesome remake by Space-time Games has just appeared, a game which many retro gamers of the Amstrad, C64 and Spectrum era would remember. This is Sabre Wulf developed and released by Ultimate Play The Game in 1984. You have to guide Sabreman through the maze of jungle pathways, searching for the four pieces of the Wulf amulet which will persuade the guardian of the cave to reveal the exit, but that won't be so easy!

It's time to say THANKYOU EVERYONE, with a special give away. Indie Retro News has hit One Hundred Thousand Views, that's incredible for us. Back from Geek 2013 - Gaming Expo

Indie Retro News is back from the Geek 2013 Gaming exp and wow was it so much fun! It was everything that Margate needed. As many of you know, Margate is a very run down seaside town and to have such a gaming event such as this, really boosted the tourism trade that Margate so desperately needed.  From the moment you walk in the front doors you just know that this was going to be a lot of fun and most of it was a step back in time, with older generations going " I remember playing this "

Delver's Drop - Physics Based 2D Action RPG - Kickstarter

A bunch of bearded blokes calling themselves Pixelscopic are developing an action RPG that uses 'fluid physics-based movement' and randomised dungeons to bring hours of fun to all you want-to-be scoundrels out there!

Eleusis - 3d First Person Adventure Horror

A rather creepy slender style game has just appeared, so if you feel like playing with the lights out and head phones on just for a scare, this could well fit the style. This is Eleusis which is a 3d first-person adventure game developed by Nocturnal Works. It takes place in a seemingly abandoned village in Greece where the player character, while trying to seek refuge, finds himself in a place of mysterious events. But all is not as it seems, as this is when the scare factor starts to creep in

Blackwell Epiphany - HQ Adventure from Wadjet Eye

Another Blackwell adventure game has appeared in the already long list of great adventures and this looks to further increase the excellence that comes out from the developers of Wadjet Eye. In Blackwell Epiphany, once again the detective and the ghost are out to solve the mystery and perhaps along the way help other ghosts in need of peace.

Avadon 2: The Corruption - Fantasy RPG

The well known company Spider Software, creators of rpgs such as Avernum and Geneforg have once again put their development hands into another great title. This is Avadon 2: The Corruption, a second chapter in the epic Avadon trilogy. In this fantasy role-playing adventure, you will serve the keep of Avadon, working as a spy and warrior to fight the enemies of your homeland. As a servant of the Black Fortress, your word is law. Legend of Grimrock 2 Announced : Rpg Dungeon Crawler

Hot News, Almost Human Ltd has just announced Legend of Grimrock 2! Now I've played Legend of Grimrock 1 and not only was it a huge success selling over 600,000 copies in the gaming world, I thought it was bloody brilliant too. It was an epic dungeon crawler, which took many of us back to our roots of crpg goodness, battling creatures and solving puzzles in a grid based movement dungeon system. Basically the Dungeon Master of this generation, with HD graphics and lighting.

Indie Royale - The Chosen Bundle

Another decent bundle from Indie Royale, is The chosen Bundle which contains 5 great indie games chosen by you the gamer. The list features Hard Reset, an explosive FPS with a dark sci-fi, cyberpunk setting, Jolly Rover in a pirate style adventure style, Vertex Dispenser and the recently greenlit (soon on Steam game) DLC Quest. Also included is the bonus game Lair of the Evildoer.

[Kickstarter] Mage's Initiation - Adventure/RPG title

The success of Kickstarter has allowed the rather forlorn and obscure PC adventure genre to have somewhat of a Renaissance of late. This may be due to the rather low production costs involved to create a title and perhaps a reason we're seeing a spurt of successful projects in the genre.

Hoping to become another such title is 'Mage's Initiation' by Himalaya Studios, with the legacy of titles such as Quest for Glory and the King's Quest series, its modest target of $65,000 has already passed the halfway mark in a mere 24 hours.

Lords of Xulima - isometric, turn-based, single-player 2D rpg

A rather unusual game in the type of play style that Lords of Xulima brings to the gamer, as it's an isometric, turn-based, single-player 2D role-playing game. You'll be playing in a top down view while visiting locations and talking to npc's, then battling creatures in a dungeon crawl style turn based combat system. Slightly different in that most rpg battles are fought on the same screen. Lords of Xulima which is developed by Numantian Games, is set in a mythical lost continent called Xulima where the world makers lived in ancient times. The game features a challenging vast world where you will have to command and create a six characters party in an epic story between gods and men.

Grimoire : Heralds of the Winged Exemplar - RPG Dungeon Crawler

Many years ago Grimoire, an RPG Dungeon Crawler was mentioned on a well known forum such as Rpg Codex, however through many promises of a release it never came to pass until today. The developer Cleveland M. Blakemore has a rather iffy past, thus it's a shame for a such a cool looking retro game to be tainted by one person. Grimoire should've been released a long time ago, but through indiegogo funding we finally have a demo.

WarZ - Patch Notes 2/19/2013

Another patch : 2/19/2013 was just released for this Online Zombie Apocalypse game, however there are no zombie glitch fixes and no promised weapons like the Chain Saw. The loot has been well and truly busted these last few days and our clan has become rather bored of the game and it's lack of developer involvement.  Oh and did I mention that the public servers are an absolute hack fest!

Games I remember, with a remake - Mega Lo Mania

Another game I remember so well, was Mega Lo Mania, which was an RTS developed by Sensible Software. It was released for the Amiga in 1991, and ported to many other platforms including the Atari ST, Mega Drive/Genesis, Super NES, DOS, and the Sharp X68000. The object of Mega Lo Mania was to conquer 28 islands, divided into nine Epochs that span the history of mankind.

Brutal Doom - Could Doom be any more gorish?

I don't think there are that many people out there that don't know of Doom, it's a very blood thirsty 1993 science fiction horror-themed game by id Software. In Doom, players assume the role of a space marine, who must fight his way through the hordes of invading demons from Hell. But along comes Doom Brutal, a mod which pushes the boundaries of the level of violence that Doom already has.

The game has been updated to support bigger displays and arbitrary resolutions. The downloaded package contains everything including the videos and an automatic update tool

Games I remember, with a remake - Green Beret

Over the next few months I'll be doing articles on the games that I remember and I'm sure many of you will do as well. They will take us back to the time of squealing tapes, or slow loading floppies, a time that many of us enjoyed and when developers put so much gameplay into such small data sizes. You'll be able to play the remakes and relive those times as if they were just released today. Well today it's time to look at Green Beret, an action, arcade platformer from way back in the mid 1980's.

L'Abbaye des Morts - Retro Platformer with a Spectrum ZX flavour

A fun retro style platformer which looks like it just came out on the Spectrum ZX, is L'Abbaye des Morts. You'll come across a horror style game, which is set in an old church of the Spectrum Era, with its dark background and bright colors, and comparing to Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy.

QuestLord - Dungeon Crawler RPG (iOS, Android)

As some of you know I love my Dungeon Crawlers and this is exactly what an iOS, Android device needs. This is a rather brilliant Dungeon Crawler and it's called QuestLord, in which as the hero, it's your job to save the Realm from falling apart!

Chivalry : Medieval Warfare - Almost no gravity

Ever wondered what Chivalry : Medieval Warfare would be like with hardly any gravity, well here's your chance to find out. I found this video rather funny ;)

Another World - Retro Classic for your BlackBerry!

Another World the cult classic is now available for your BlackBerry. Also known as Out Of This World and released across more than a dozen platforms since its 1991 debut, Another World has attained this cult status among critics and sophisticated gamers alike for its cinematic effects in the graphics, sound and cut scenes.  It was also one of the best retro games from the Amiga 500, as such this is highly recommended and not to be missed on your BlackBerry device.

STORM :Neverending night - Foreword

This is STORM :Neverending night - Foreword, a side scrolling arcade, action, beat em up set in the nearest future. Looking as if it's a mash up between Metro, Stalker and Deadlight, you play as a character in a post apocalyptic ruin of a former megalopolis, filled with the nastiest of mutants. While trying to find the reasons behind this global disaster and from being a mutant yourself, you must head to the mutant city itself.

Chiptune compilation - Over 4hrs worth of excellent 8bit tunes!

It's time for the Chiptune Compilation, an excellent list of tracks from many different artists, spanning well over 4hrs worth of playtime. Some of the tunes come from games that have long since passed through the halls of time, yet remain deep in our memories. So sit back, chill out, turn up and enjoy!

System Shock 2 is now on gog!

An epic sci-fi with survival, first person, game play based horror is now on gog. System Shock 2 was released in 1999 with such high praise, that it's still remembered even today. It has an intense story, with character based stats, upgrades and an inventory system of an rpg. There will be moments of sheer terror as you walk the horror filled corridors and rooms of a space ship. Are you alone? Will you be able to defend yourself?

Superfrog HD - Platforming fun coming to PS3 and PS Vita

Anyone remember Superfrog? Well I do! It was a brilliant scrolling 2D platforming Amiga and PC(DOS) game. It was originally developed and published for the Amiga in 1993 by Team 17 and then later released for PC(DOS) systems and finally appeared on GOG.com. Team 17 are once again going back to it's roots by pushing Superfrog into the HD era for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita later this year. Superfrog HD will feature all the levels you remember from 1993 but with all new graphics.

Planet Explorers - explore, gather, build, create, fight & conquer

A new game which is still in development, looks to tip the balance in the creation scale. This is Planet Explorers from Pathea Games, whereby you must explore, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, conquer the land.  Sure, we've had so many games of this type before, however the thought of massive enemies and advanced weaponry in Planet Explorers could be something special.

Alien Breed - Sci-Fi Retro Shooter (Android) & Remakes

Remember that awesome 1991 alien shooter on the Amiga? You know, Alien Breed, well it's back for a remake on your Android device! Alien Breed was a classic and many people know of this game, as it was the first in the Alien Breed series of science fiction shooter video games played with a top-down view, for one or two players. Although it was released in 1991 on the Amiga another version came out in 1993 for MS-DOS.

WarZ - Patch 2/12/13

A new patch 2/12/13 is going to arrive at any time now for WarZ and it's one i'm looking forward to, especially with more weapon types and Zeds. To be honest I usually do like a nice update for WarZ unless they add things that nobody wants, it happens. So let's see what has been updated!

Towns - city building/management rpg

Anyone up for a bit of Dwarfs and a mix of Dungeon Keeper, then check out this constantly updated game, Towns. In Towns you manage your own little village on top of a dungeon.  However instead of managing one single hero, you develop the town and help the people in it, oh and kill the odd dungeon creature!

Quest for Infamy - Adventure (New 2.0 Demo)

This is Quest for Infamy, a high quality point and click adventure title that takes us back to the Sierra adventure days. What's more, Quest for Infamy was a huge kickstarter success that raised over $63K. But what could make this game so damn impressive? Well how about the fact that the same developers behind the critically-acclaimed remakes of King’s Quest III and Space Quest 2 are developing this very title? Excited yet, I am!

Ildefonse - Horror

I do love a good horror and this looks to fit that perfectly, this is Ildefonse. A first-person horror game made in Unity3D. The game contains suspense, psychological horror and immersion in history. Ildefonse is inspired by several feature Japanese, Korean and Spanish films , so think of it as a Project Zero feeling.

Stardew Valley - Minecraft/Retro RPG mash up

A lot of us love our retro snes style RPG's and this one looks to up the play field with not just the rpg side, but it also contains a hint of Minecraft as well. Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG with support for up to 4-player co-op!
